6 ATHLETICS
In July 2006, the Tansey Gymnasium was closed due to a flooring issue which affected
the men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball teams. As a result, teams were
forced to practice and compete at numerous off-campus facilities; however, team
spirits were not dampened. “Wentworth students always demonstrate perseverance
and dedication to their sport,” commented Lee Conrad, director of athletics. “The
teams were displaced for much of their seasons, but that did not stop the men’s
basketball team from winning the conference championship and a trip to the NCAA’s.”
The gym, complete with its brand new floor, opened in late January 2007, just in time
for the home stretch for both basketball teams, the early part of the men’s volleyball
season, and the start of practice for the Leopard spring sport teams.
Individual Accomplishments
Twenty-two of Wentworth’s student-athletes were honored as all-conference performers.
Included in the list were a pair of conference rookies of the year and a conference
player of the year. Additionally, men’s basketball coach Tom Devitt and ice hockey
coach R.J. Tolan were honored as coaches of the year in their respective conferences.
Caitlin Wall, BAET ’07, became the first Wentworth women’s soccer player to score
100 or more points in her career.
Cheyenne Noble, BMET ’08, became the third Wentworth women’s basketball player
to grab 1,000 or more rebounds in her career.
Seven individuals—Warren Cochrane, AET ’81 (rifle), Ivan Filippov, BMT ’01 (ice hockey),
Kevin Hanlon, BCT ’00 (men’s basketball), and D.J. McBain, BCMT ’01 (lacrosse), as
well as contributors Myles, AC ’28, and Eugenia Sweeney, and former president
Dr. John Van Domelen—were inducted into the Wentworth Athletics Hall of Fame.
Staff Changes
program’s history, stepped down after four years, and was replaced by Amanda
Rodgerson, a former standout at the University of New England.
Jason Jeffers, CHC ’97, the men’s and women’s volleyball coach, stepped down from his
men’s coaching duties and was replaced by Nam Phan, who played his freshman season
