Bayan Loco community <strong>is</strong> a community located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural surbubs <strong>of</strong> Kafanchan, Kaduna State. Due<br />

<strong>to</strong> longterm drought experienced <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country almost all through <strong>the</strong> year, primary<br />

schools, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural sett<strong>in</strong>g experience frequent outbreak <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>eases and flu result<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

poor use <strong>of</strong> water. Availabilty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pit <strong>to</strong>ilets <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> primary school has <strong>be</strong>en able <strong>to</strong> curtail <strong>the</strong><br />

contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school prem<strong>is</strong>es with faeces and ur<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

It has also contributed <strong>to</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mobidity rates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school population and it has promoted<br />

comfort and sense <strong>of</strong> well<strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g for anyone that <strong>is</strong> pressed <strong>of</strong> faeces and ur<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

7. Description <strong>of</strong> your activities with <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund (with<strong>in</strong> 500 words):<br />

The project was implementation done <strong>in</strong> three phases:<br />

a). Assessment Phase: (one week)Th<strong>is</strong> phase will <strong>be</strong> a period w<strong>here</strong>by we organized a<br />

stakeholder meet<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> community mem<strong>be</strong>rs. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>is</strong>sue we would d<strong>is</strong>cussed<br />

were : i. formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project committee; <strong>the</strong>se people were <strong>in</strong>-charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ception and till end <strong>of</strong> project and <strong>be</strong>yond. The committee compr<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chairman (Parents<br />

Teachers Association) PTA, <strong>the</strong> headmaster, a representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional ruler, men’s group,<br />

women’s group and youth group.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> period also, a memorandum <strong>of</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g was signed <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>the</strong><br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g organization (CREN) and <strong>the</strong> community stakeholder <strong>to</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

project after <strong>the</strong> project year.<br />

b). The Implementation Phase: (three weeks) Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> implementation phase proper. In th<strong>is</strong><br />

phase, we selected <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st contrac<strong>to</strong>r that applied for <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project. .<br />

All <strong>the</strong> components <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> project was actively <strong>in</strong> process <strong>of</strong> construction was completed. Here,<br />

<strong>the</strong> project implementation committee moni<strong>to</strong>red <strong>the</strong> day <strong>to</strong> day activities <strong>of</strong> work on site. Th<strong>is</strong>

helped <strong>to</strong> ensure quality <strong>of</strong> work at site.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> stage <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>the</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> materials, digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holes, lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> foundation, ra<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> foundation level, dress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pit holes, ro<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g..<br />

c). Moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and Evaluation Phase: at th<strong>is</strong> phase, CREN paid v<strong>is</strong>its <strong>to</strong> project site <strong>to</strong><br />

ensure completion and quality <strong>of</strong> work done. The committee mem<strong>be</strong>rs drafted plans on how <strong>to</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> projects s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> project <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>irs. Follow<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong>, <strong>the</strong> project was comm<strong>is</strong>sioned and<br />

8. Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water <strong>is</strong>sues/ objectives <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities:<br />

L.G.E.A. Mamuda Primary School, Bayan Loco ,Katsit ung-rimi, Kafanchan <strong>is</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

government schools located <strong>in</strong> suburbs <strong>of</strong> Kaduna State . It has a population <strong>of</strong> 483 (266<br />

boys, 171 girls) pupils and13 teachers. Sanitation <strong>in</strong> that community has <strong>be</strong>en a big<br />

challenge as <strong>the</strong>re are no sources <strong>of</strong> water supply and <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities available.<br />

Due <strong>to</strong> non available <strong>of</strong> water and <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities, school children normally pollute <strong>the</strong><br />

environment with faecal deposits. As a result, <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>of</strong>ten outbreaks <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>eases<br />

amongst <strong>the</strong> school population result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> high drop-outs, morbidity and mortality rates.<br />

As it <strong>is</strong>, Pit latr<strong>in</strong>es <strong>be</strong>come <strong>the</strong> only <strong>to</strong>ilet facility that can <strong>be</strong> managed and susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>be</strong>cause <strong>of</strong> its use without <strong>the</strong> need for water.<br />

9. Description <strong>of</strong> your activities with <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund:<br />

The project started earnestly <strong>in</strong> Decem<strong>be</strong>r 2010. The <strong>in</strong>itial project location was changed due <strong>to</strong><br />

government <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> former location.<br />

The project was implementation done <strong>in</strong> three phases:<br />

February, 2011. Many dignitaries were present <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> government local education<br />

authority. A lecture was given <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> audience by Mr. Hassan Usman- a Social Studies teacher<br />

on Environmental Health Sanitation and how <strong>to</strong> susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> project was summarized by Mrs.<br />

Osuagwu Glory. The teachers and community anf government representatives were very happy<br />

for th<strong>is</strong> great honour and ass<strong>is</strong>tance given <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

with <strong>the</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g organ<strong>is</strong>ation<br />

11. Methodology <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities:<br />

• The project started after series <strong>of</strong> stakeholders meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• The project was accepted by <strong>the</strong> community mem<strong>be</strong>rs<br />

• The contract was awarded <strong>to</strong> contrac<strong>to</strong>rs approved by <strong>the</strong> village head<br />

• CREN moni<strong>to</strong>red <strong>the</strong> project three times <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>the</strong> project <strong>is</strong> completed<br />

• Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>is</strong>sion<strong>in</strong>g a health talk on environmental sanitation was given by Mr. Hassan<br />

Usman<br />

• F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> project was handed over <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community mem<strong>be</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong>y prom<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>to</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> take care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future<br />
