6. Description of the water issues/ objectives of your activities (within 250 words):
Bayan Loco community is a community located in the rural surbubs of Kafanchan, Kaduna State. Due
to longterm drought experienced in this part of the country almost all through the year, primary
schools, especially in the rural setting experience frequent outbreak of diseases and flu resulting from
poor use of water. Availabilty of the pit toilets in this primary school has been able to curtail the
contamination of the school premises with faeces and urine.
It has also contributed to reducing the mobidity rates of the school population and it has promoted
comfort and sense of wellbeing for anyone that is pressed of faeces and urine.
7. Description of your activities with the JWF Fund (within 500 words):
The project was implementation done in three phases:
a). Assessment Phase: (one week)This phase will be a period whereby we organized a
stakeholder meeting with the community members. Some of the issue we would discussed
were : i. formation of the project committee; these people were in-charge of the project from the
inception and till end of project and beyond. The committee comprised of the chairman (Parents
Teachers Association) PTA, the headmaster, a representative of the traditional ruler, men’s group,
women’s group and youth group.
During this period also, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the
implementing organization (CREN) and the community stakeholder to maintain and sustain the
project after the project year.
b). The Implementation Phase: (three weeks) This is the implementation phase proper. In this
phase, we selected the best contractor that applied for the construction of the project. .
All the components of this project was actively in process of construction was completed. Here,
the project implementation committee monitored the day to day activities of work on site. This

helped to ensure quality of work at site.
This stage involved the gathering of materials, digging of the holes, laying of foundation, raising
the building to foundation level, dressing the pit holes, roofing, and painting..
c). Monitoring and Evaluation Phase: at this phase, CREN paid visits to project site to
ensure completion and quality of work done. The committee members drafted plans on how to
sustain the projects since the project is theirs. Following this, the project was commissioned and
handed over to the school community.

7. Name of the project or activity: Construction of Three Pit Latrines at L.G.E.A. Mamuda Primary
School, Bayan Loco, Katsit ung-rimi, Kafanchan, Kaduna State
8. Description of the water issues/ objectives of your projects or activities:
L.G.E.A. Mamuda Primary School, Bayan Loco ,Katsit ung-rimi, Kafanchan is one of the
government schools located in suburbs of Kaduna State . It has a population of 483 (266
boys, 171 girls) pupils and13 teachers. Sanitation in that community has been a big
challenge as there are no sources of water supply and toilet facilities available.
Due to non available of water and toilet facilities, school children normally pollute the
environment with faecal deposits. As a result, there are often outbreaks of diseases
amongst the school population resulting to high drop-outs, morbidity and mortality rates.
As it is, Pit latrines become the only toilet facility that can be managed and sustained
because of its use without the need for water.
9. Description of your activities with the JWF Fund:
The project started earnestly in December 2010. The initial project location was changed due to
government intervention in the former location.
The project was implementation done in three phases:

d). Commissioning/lecture on Hygiene: We officially commissioned the project on the 10 th of
February, 2011. Many dignitaries were present including the government local education
authority. A lecture was given to the audience by Mr. Hassan Usman- a Social Studies teacher
on Environmental Health Sanitation and how to sustain the project was summarized by Mrs.
Osuagwu Glory. The teachers and community anf government representatives were very happy
for this great honour and assistance given to them.
10. Involved stakeholders: Parents/Teachers association formed a Project Implementation Committee
with the implementing organisation
11. Methodology of your projects or activities:
• The project started after series of stakeholders meeting
• The project was accepted by the community members
• The contract was awarded to contractors approved by the village head
• CREN monitored the project three times before the project is completed
• During the commissioning a health talk on environmental sanitation was given by Mr. Hassan
Usman
• Finally, the project was handed over to the community members and they promised to
continue to take care of the project in the future

• Three pit toilets constructed
• Over 451 Pupils and teachers have comfortable place to ease themselves of faeces and urine
• The environment is now void of indiscriminate dispose of faeces and urine

• Community members participated actively and grateful to be beneficiary of an international
aid.
• The project has contributed immensely to promote conducive environment for learning
*The evaluation of the project must be as quantitative as possible, such as the decrease in
BOD/COD concentration, the distance of beach cleaned, the number of water supply or
sanitation facilities provided, the number of people educated and so on.

• Pit toilets in low resources communities is the best option in sanitary promotion
• The community members thanked the JWF and plead for more assistance in regards to
provision of well water and other infrastructures to the school.
