JWF Fund 2010 Report #2668. Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water <strong>is</strong>sues/ objectives <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities:In May 2010, PEYORG under<strong>to</strong>ok a situational analys<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong> sanitation conditions <strong>in</strong> some selectedcommunities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> South D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong> Ghana. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places v<strong>is</strong>ited was <strong>the</strong> remote ruralcommunity <strong>of</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi, with about 700 <strong>in</strong>habitants. It was d<strong>is</strong>covered that, <strong>the</strong> communitylacked access <strong>to</strong> properly constructed <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities, and also had grave challenges with wasted<strong>is</strong>posal. Informal d<strong>is</strong>cussions with some mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community revealed that, it hadgradually <strong>be</strong>come common practice for people, particularly children <strong>to</strong> defecate <strong>in</strong> open placessuch as refuse dumps, and for some adults <strong>to</strong> also defecate <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> polye<strong>the</strong>ne bags and dump<strong>the</strong>m at unapproved sites. The elderly and <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>abled were also particularly d<strong>is</strong>advantaged as<strong>the</strong> currently dilapidated <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities used by <strong>the</strong> community lacked <strong>the</strong> necessary prov<strong>is</strong>ions,such as seats <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong> peculiar needs. Our <strong>in</strong>teractions also revealed that very few people <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> community had <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir homes, and <strong>the</strong>se usually came under enormouspressure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> a funeral or festival when people v<strong>is</strong>ited <strong>the</strong> village. Fig 2 and 3 show <strong>the</strong>condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old and dilapidated pit latr<strong>in</strong>e used by <strong>the</strong> community as a place <strong>of</strong> convenience.Fig 2: The state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old <strong>to</strong>ilet as Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi.Fig 3: People wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a queue <strong>to</strong> access <strong>the</strong> old dilapidated facility which served as a place <strong>of</strong>convenience for mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.Our <strong>in</strong>teractions with mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community fur<strong>the</strong>r showed that improper d<strong>is</strong>posal <strong>of</strong> waste

JWF Fund 2010 Report #266was a big challenge for authorities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. Gutters and streets with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> communitywere constantly littered with waste materials, and th<strong>is</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> reliable sources had resulted<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>cidences <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>eases – such as diarrhoea, sk<strong>in</strong> rashes, typhoid fever, and o<strong>the</strong>rwater related health conditions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. PEYORG followed up its situational analys<strong>is</strong>with d<strong>is</strong>cussions with <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community on how <strong>be</strong>st <strong>the</strong>se conditions could<strong>be</strong> remedied. Fig 4 shows <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> refuse dumps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.Fig 4: The state <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> refuse dumps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community; children, for lack <strong>of</strong> public <strong>to</strong>iletfacilities defecate openly at <strong>the</strong>se sites. The follow<strong>in</strong>g objectives were <strong>the</strong>refore agreed on with <strong>the</strong> community as immediate steps whichneeded <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> taken when <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g fund<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund was identified byPEYORG <strong>in</strong> July 2010.Objectives:a) To construct a 10 cham<strong>be</strong>r <strong>to</strong>ilet with seats for <strong>the</strong> elderly and <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>abled.b) To undertake sensitization campaigns with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community on proper sanitation.9. Description <strong>of</strong> your activities with <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund:PEYORG secured $1000 from <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund <strong>to</strong> support <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ilet facility andalso fund some sensitization campaigns on sanitation. However, due <strong>to</strong> bank charges, only $900was actually received by PEYORG after <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> organization’s account. The amountmentioned was used <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with an additional $500 ra<strong>is</strong>ed by PEYORG <strong>to</strong> purchase build<strong>in</strong>gmaterials such as wood <strong>of</strong> different lengths and sizes, bags <strong>of</strong> cement, nails, sand, ro<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>gsheets, iron hooks, pick axe, pans, iron rods, <strong>be</strong>nd<strong>in</strong>g wires, among o<strong>the</strong>rs. Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fund wasalso used <strong>to</strong> mobilize <strong>the</strong> community for various activities which were undertaken as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>project. Attached <strong>to</strong> th<strong>is</strong> report are <strong>the</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g documents for all <strong>the</strong> transactions undertaken.10. Involved stakeholders: The project was a partnership <strong>be</strong>tween PEYORG and <strong>the</strong> Chief andpeople <strong>of</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi. The community was <strong>in</strong>volved at every stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project, and <strong>in</strong>deedled <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> activities. Various meet<strong>in</strong>gs were held with <strong>the</strong> communitymem<strong>be</strong>rs at various stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project <strong>to</strong> evaluate <strong>the</strong> work <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g done, and <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r seek <strong>the</strong>way forward, particularly when fund<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> project <strong>be</strong>came exhausted halfway through <strong>the</strong>

JWF Fund 2010 Report #266implementation stage. Fig 5 shows one <strong>of</strong> such meet<strong>in</strong>gs at <strong>the</strong> palace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village.Fig 5: Meet<strong>in</strong>g with Chief and op<strong>in</strong>ion leaders <strong>of</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi.11. Methodology <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities: The approach used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> project was extensively participa<strong>to</strong>ry. PEYORG led <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> funds for <strong>the</strong> projectwhilst <strong>the</strong> community committed labour, and materials such as bricks, water, and s<strong>to</strong>nes for <strong>the</strong>project. All <strong>the</strong> art<strong>is</strong>ans, such as carpenters, masons, and steel <strong>be</strong>nders were drawn on voluntarybas<strong>is</strong> from <strong>the</strong> community. The young men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village dug <strong>the</strong> 20 feet manhole for <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ilet,whilst <strong>the</strong> women and children brought s<strong>to</strong>nes and water <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> site for construction. Theexerc<strong>is</strong>e was superv<strong>is</strong>ed by an eight-mem<strong>be</strong>r committee, cons<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> two women and six men,selected by mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community at a community ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>the</strong>implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project. The committee was tasked <strong>to</strong> mobilize mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community<strong>to</strong> work on selected days, and also carry out sensitization meet<strong>in</strong>gs on proper sanitation with<strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> community. The committee reported directly <strong>to</strong> PEYORG, and <strong>the</strong> Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village. Fig 6shows a pho<strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committee mem<strong>be</strong>rs.Fig 6: PEYORG <strong>of</strong>ficers d<strong>is</strong>cuss<strong>in</strong>g details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project with <strong>the</strong> eight-mem<strong>be</strong>r committee set upfor <strong>the</strong> project.12. The num<strong>be</strong>r <strong>of</strong> direct <strong>be</strong>neficiaries <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities: About 700 people

JWF Fund 2010 Report #266would directly <strong>be</strong>nefit from <strong>the</strong> facility.Fig 7: A cross section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community mem<strong>be</strong>rs at community sensitization meet<strong>in</strong>g.13. Achieved outcomes <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities:The project succeeded <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g its objectives <strong>of</strong> construct<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>to</strong>ilet facility which can meet<strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> both young and old, and also conduct<strong>in</strong>g sensitization meet<strong>in</strong>gs on sanitation. A 10cham<strong>be</strong>r <strong>to</strong>ilet facility- 5 cham<strong>be</strong>rs each for males and females, with seats for <strong>the</strong> elderly and <strong>the</strong>d<strong>is</strong>abled has <strong>be</strong>en completed through partnership <strong>be</strong>tween JWF, PEYORG and <strong>the</strong> communitymem<strong>be</strong>rs. The facility <strong>is</strong> expected <strong>to</strong> serve some 700 people liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. The projectalso educated over 300 <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community on <strong>the</strong> need <strong>to</strong> adopt more susta<strong>in</strong>ablewaste d<strong>is</strong>posal practices, <strong>to</strong> help improve sanitation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. Through th<strong>is</strong> project <strong>to</strong>o, acommittee which would seek <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g many more development projects <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community has<strong>be</strong>en set up. PEYORG hopes <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> work with <strong>the</strong> committee <strong>to</strong> secure additional fund<strong>in</strong>gfrom <strong>the</strong> JWF and o<strong>the</strong>r sources <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong>ilet facility <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> easternpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village, <strong>to</strong> serve <strong>the</strong> local school <strong>of</strong> about 250 children, and some surround<strong>in</strong>ghouseholds which may f<strong>in</strong>d it cum<strong>be</strong>rsome <strong>to</strong> walk all <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> western part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>community w<strong>here</strong> <strong>the</strong> new <strong>to</strong>ilet <strong>is</strong> located.Fig 8: A view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project site show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 20feet manhole for <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ilet.14. Conclusion, such as lessons learned, rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong>sues for future activities.Overall, <strong>the</strong> project succeeded <strong>in</strong> awaken<strong>in</strong>g communal spirit among <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>community, <strong>in</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> some common community development goals such as access <strong>to</strong>sanitation facilities and conditions, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a more susta<strong>in</strong>able ‘community’. The

JWF Fund 2010 Report #266<strong>to</strong>ilet facility constructed with support from JWF <strong>is</strong> seen by all as a major step forward <strong>to</strong>wardimprov<strong>in</strong>g sanitation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> locality. Although <strong>the</strong> actual expenditure for <strong>the</strong> project wassignificantly <strong>in</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial budget, it did not <strong>in</strong> any way limit PEYORG and <strong>the</strong> communityfrom achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> objectives for which <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund was given. We w<strong>is</strong>h <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>to</strong> expressour s<strong>in</strong>cere appreciation <strong>to</strong> JWF for <strong>the</strong> fund, which <strong>in</strong> many ways brought commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>project. With <strong>the</strong> experience acquired by all parties, we <strong>be</strong>lieve we are <strong>be</strong>tter placed now <strong>to</strong>replicate th<strong>is</strong> success s<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>in</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g communities w<strong>here</strong> <strong>the</strong> sanitation challenge <strong>is</strong> evenmore pronounced. Neighbour<strong>in</strong>g rural communities like Saaman, Beposo and Akrampa, whichheard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> JWF project at Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi have expressed <strong>the</strong> will<strong>in</strong>gness <strong>to</strong> partner PEYORGand The JWF Fund <strong>to</strong> construct such appropriate sanitation technologies for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>habitants.Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se communities have expressed <strong>the</strong> will<strong>in</strong>gness <strong>to</strong> commit labour, land, bricks, s<strong>to</strong>nes,and also dig <strong>the</strong> manhole for <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ilet. We w<strong>is</strong>h by th<strong>is</strong> report <strong>to</strong> request for additional fund<strong>in</strong>gfrom JWF <strong>to</strong> construct more <strong>of</strong> such facilities, us<strong>in</strong>g local materials for <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>is</strong>tedcommunities. Estimates show that, at $ 1,700 per <strong>to</strong>ilet, we can construct such facilities with<strong>in</strong> 3months <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>is</strong>ted communities. It <strong>is</strong> our hope that th<strong>is</strong> partnership <strong>be</strong>tween JWF Fund andPEYORG would cont<strong>in</strong>ue, and actually lead <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> basic water and sanitationfacilities for <strong>the</strong>se communities, which are among <strong>the</strong> most impover<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong>Ghana.

JWF Fund 2010 Report #266NB: Due <strong>to</strong> some f<strong>in</strong>ancial challenges we are unable <strong>to</strong> present a pho<strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> completedand pa<strong>in</strong>ted build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> report. The f<strong>in</strong>al works – f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g are on –go<strong>in</strong>g,and we w<strong>is</strong>h <strong>to</strong> assure JWF that we would send <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al pho<strong>to</strong>s as soon as possible.
