JWF Fund 2010 Report #266was a big challenge for authorities in the community. Gutters and streets within the communitywere constantly littered with waste materials, and this according to reliable sources had resultedin increased incidences of diseases – such as diarrhoea, skin rashes, typhoid fever, and otherwater related health conditions in the community. PEYORG followed up its situational analysiswith discussions with the opinion leaders of the community on how best these conditions couldbe remedied. Fig 4 shows the state of one of the refuse dumps in the community.Fig 4: The state of one of the refuse dumps in the community; children, for lack of public toiletfacilities defecate openly at these sites.The following objectives were therefore agreed on with the community as immediate steps whichneeded to be taken when the possibility of securing funding from the JWF Fund was identified byPEYORG in July 2010.Objectives:a) To construct a 10 chamber toilet with seats for the elderly and the disabled.b) To undertake sensitization campaigns within the community on proper sanitation.9. Description of your activities with the JWF Fund:PEYORG secured $1000 from the JWF Fund to support the construction of the toilet facility andalso fund some sensitization campaigns on sanitation. However, due to bank charges, only $900was actually received by PEYORG after the transfer into the organization’s account. The amountmentioned was used together with an additional $500 raised by PEYORG to purchase buildingmaterials such as wood of different lengths and sizes, bags of cement, nails, sand, roofingsheets, iron hooks, pick axe, pans, iron rods, bending wires, among others. Part of the fund wasalso used to mobilize the community for various activities which were undertaken as part of theproject. Attached to this report are the supporting documents for all the transactions undertaken.10. Involved stakeholders: The project was a partnership between PEYORG and the Chief andpeople of Assin Kumasi. The community was involved at every stage of the project, and indeedled the implementation of the activities. Various meetings were held with the communitymembers at various stages of the project to evaluate the work being done, and together seek theway forward, particularly when funding for the project became exhausted halfway through the
