Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water <strong>is</strong>sues/ objectives <strong>of</strong> your projects or activities:In May 2010, PEYORG under<strong>to</strong>ok a situational analys<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong> sanitation conditions <strong>in</strong> some selectedcommunities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> South D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong> Ghana. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places v<strong>is</strong>ited was <strong>the</strong> remote ruralcommunity <strong>of</strong> Ass<strong>in</strong> Kumasi, with about 700 <strong>in</strong>habitants. It was d<strong>is</strong>covered that, <strong>the</strong> communitylacked access <strong>to</strong> properly constructed <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities, and also had grave challenges with wasted<strong>is</strong>posal. Informal d<strong>is</strong>cussions with some mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community revealed that, it hadgradually <strong>be</strong>come common practice for people, particularly children <strong>to</strong> defecate <strong>in</strong> open placessuch as refuse dumps, and for some adults <strong>to</strong> also defecate <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> polye<strong>the</strong>ne bags and dump<strong>the</strong>m at unapproved sites. The elderly and <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>abled were also particularly d<strong>is</strong>advantaged as<strong>the</strong> currently dilapidated <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities used by <strong>the</strong> community lacked <strong>the</strong> necessary prov<strong>is</strong>ions,such as seats <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong> peculiar needs. Our <strong>in</strong>teractions also revealed that very few people <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> community had <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir homes, and <strong>the</strong>se usually came under enormouspressure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> a funeral or festival when people v<strong>is</strong>ited <strong>the</strong> village.
