Incoherent Support<br />

Collect<strong>in</strong>g tolls on <strong>the</strong> turnpike must be one of <strong>the</strong> loneliest<br />

jobs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Each toll attendant sits <strong>in</strong> his or her booth,<br />

cut off from o<strong>the</strong>r attendants. Many drivers pass by each booth.<br />

None stays long enough for a brief “hello.” Most don’t<br />

acknowledge <strong>the</strong> attendant at all. Many toll attendants work at<br />

night, push<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m “out of sync” with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> world. The<br />

attendants have to deal with rude drivers who treat <strong>the</strong>m like<br />

non-people, swear<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> long l<strong>in</strong>es at <strong>the</strong> tollgate.<br />

Attendants dislike how cut off <strong>the</strong>y feel from <strong>the</strong>ir co-workers.<br />

Except for <strong>in</strong>frequent breaks, <strong>the</strong>y have little chance to chat<br />

with each o<strong>the</strong>r and swap horror stories--small pleasures that<br />

would make <strong>the</strong>ir o<strong>the</strong>rwise rout<strong>in</strong>e jobs bearable.<br />

Coherent Support<br />

To avoid <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>ds of problems found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>coherent paragraph, use—as<br />

<strong>the</strong> revised version does—two key strategies: (1) a clearly chronological, spatial, or<br />

emphatic order (“Worst of all, attendants say . . .”) and (2) signal devices (“First of<br />

all, although many drivers pass by . . .”) to show how ideas are connected. The<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g sections discuss <strong>the</strong>se two strategies.<br />

Chronological, Spatial, and Emphatic Order. As you learned <strong>in</strong> Chapter 5,<br />

an entire essay can be organized us<strong>in</strong>g chronological, spatial, or emphatic<br />

order (pages 55–56). These strategies can also be used to make a paragraph<br />

coherent.
