ON IWA STUDENTS, STAFF, AND ALUMNAE<br />
Amanda C. Almaguer ‘08 was awarded a Hispanic<br />
Scholarship Fund award for the 2008-<strong>2009</strong> school year.<br />
On November 10, Sister Lauren Beck, C.V.I., Counselor<br />
Robin Bludau, Sister Mary Brendan O’Donnell, C.V.I.,<br />
Bianca Leggio ’09 and IWA community members<br />
attended the University of St. Thomas and the Greater<br />
Houston Partnership’s Ethical Leadership in Action<br />
Award dialogue and luncheon. Board member Amy<br />
Leggio, parents Kathy Simpson, Mary Sass, and Linda<br />
Camarillo, and alumnae Cora Sue Dominy Mach ‘60,<br />
Carmen Delahoussaye Nadolney ‘55 and Diane Freitag<br />
Kopfenstiener ‘78 also attended. The ceremony honored<br />
award-winner Drayton McLane, Jr., owner of the Astros.<br />
Katherine Guandique ’11 traveled to Europe and Costa<br />
Rica with her family in June and July. She went to Paris,<br />
France, Rome, Italy, and several cities in Costa Rica. “In<br />
Costa Rica, there is a march from wherever your house is<br />
to a church,” she said. She participated in the march, she<br />
added, “because it happens once a year in Costa Rica and<br />
is a wonderful experience. I gained faith because it gave<br />
me a lot of time to think.”<br />
In June, Mattie Jackson ’11 traveled to London with<br />
Girl Scout Troop 4628, her troop of 11 years. The group<br />
went sightseeing in London, picked up trash in Hamstead<br />
Heath, as well as saw the play, “Wicked.”<br />
Maire Kelley ’11 had a short story published in Teen Ink’s<br />
online literary magazine, RAW.<br />
Joi Moseley ’11 traveled to Jerusalem and Haifa, Israel,<br />
in June with her family and the World Harvest Partners.<br />
She worked as a volunteer with the organization, which<br />
showed a film about Jesus and provided a vacation Bible<br />
school. She participated, she said, “to help share Jesus’s<br />
message with people who don’t have a chance to hear<br />
about him.”<br />

Caroline Clark, Terese Furstenberg, Daniella Gonzalez,<br />
Lily Lira, Ileana Martinez, Sarah Masters, Allison<br />
Schimelpfening, and Lindsey Stryk, all from the class<br />
of <strong>2009</strong>, completed the Extraordinary Minister Training<br />
given by Rev. Page Polk on October 30 at St. Vincent de<br />
Paul Church.<br />
Physical Education Teacher Emily Bradford gave birth to<br />
Mary Grace Louise Bradford on September 28.<br />
Science Teacher Daniel Bryant was named a National<br />
Association of Biology Teachers “NABT” BioClub Faculty<br />
Advisor of the 2008-<strong>2009</strong> academic year. Last year, Mr.<br />
Bryant helped establish the national program, which<br />
supports teachers who would like to start an after-school<br />
biology program. He was granted a certificate and $100<br />
to use for the IWA program.<br />

Andrea Romero, Katherine Sanchez, and Paulina<br />
Sosa, all from the class of <strong>2009</strong>, were named 2008-<strong>2009</strong><br />
National Hispanic Scholars.<br />
Genevieve Santos ’10 was inducted into the Laureates<br />
Society of Photography in December. The organization<br />
will also publish one of her photos in its “Best of 2008”<br />
photography book.<br />
Teresa Stranahan ’11 participated in the Archdiocesan<br />
Youth Conference on July 11-13 at the Wyndham<br />
Greenspoint hotel. “It helped me realize it was my call as<br />
