Town of Caledon
Fences and Walls (refer to Figures 5,6,7)
The Rockside area includes many fences and walls
typical to the Southern Ontario rural landscape,
including cedar rail and stone fences. However the
characteristic Rockside fence, a carefully laid dry
stone wall with slight ‘batter’ from base to top, and
shimmed with cedar shingles is thought to be unique.
This wall was noted on several properties with former
association to the MacDonalds and their extended
family, including the designated Patullo-McDiarmid-
Simmonds Stone Fence.
Cedar Rail Fence
More typical structures include:
- ‘Rubble’ stone fences of collected
fieldstone, some topped with intact
or remnant sections of cedar rail
fence
- Mortared stone walls and/or
gateposts (e.g. Rockfort Farm,
Melville Church)
- Cedar rail fences, both straight rail
and snake rail (many appear rebuilt
with original material
Historic vegetation types and patterns of use
in the study area include:
- Remnant tree-lined roadways
- Hedgerows, windbreaks and tree-lined
farm laneways
- Remnant orchards (example on Rockfort
Farm)
- Remnant sugar bush (example on
Rockfort Farm
- Field patterns as delineated by the layout
of stone walls, and hedgerows
