Games, Design and Play<br />

Design <strong>for</strong> connected learn<strong>in</strong>g requires ty<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

research on how youth learn best with <strong>the</strong> opportunities<br />

made available through today’s networked and digital<br />

media. This talk will explore a set of guid<strong>in</strong>g design<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation of connected, game-like<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g experiences that are socially-situated,<br />

challenge-based and student-centered.<br />

About Katie Salen:<br />

Katie is a Professor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> School of Comput<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Digital <strong>Media</strong> at DePaul University and <strong>for</strong>mer Director<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>for</strong> Trans<strong>for</strong>mative <strong>Media</strong> at Parsons <strong>the</strong><br />

New School <strong>for</strong> Design, a research center focused on<br />

emerg<strong>in</strong>g trends <strong>in</strong> design and media. She locates her<br />

work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of game design and serves as <strong>the</strong><br />

Executive Director of a non-profit called <strong>the</strong> Institute of<br />

Play that is focused on games and learn<strong>in</strong>g. She is also<br />

co-author of Rules of Play, a textbook on game design,<br />

The Game Design Reader, Quest to Learn: Grow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

School <strong>for</strong> Digital Kids, and editor of The Ecology of<br />

Games: Connect<strong>in</strong>g Youth, Games, and Learn<strong>in</strong>g, all<br />

from MIT Press. She has worked as a game designer<br />

<strong>for</strong> more than 10 years and is a <strong>for</strong>mer co-editor of<br />

The International Journal of Learn<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>Media</strong>.<br />

Introduc<strong>in</strong>g 2013 FETC one-hour poster sessions! This<br />

is a new feature of FETC that will highlight <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

schools and districts that have implemented exemplary<br />

<strong>technology</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration projects with success. Case<br />

studies were selected to participate as poster<br />

presentations based on <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terest and value to<br />

FETC community and its relevance and timely content<br />

matter. These sessions provide opportunities <strong>for</strong><br />

attendees to engage <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth, <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal discussions<br />

with <strong>the</strong> presenters. Presenters post <strong>the</strong>ir displays <strong>for</strong><br />

attendee view<strong>in</strong>g, and are on-hand <strong>for</strong> discussion and<br />

network<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> assigned session times.<br />

FETC has partnered with NextVista.org, a free library<br />

of creative, <strong>education</strong>al videos by and <strong>for</strong> teachers and<br />

students everywhere, to promote <strong>the</strong> teacher strand<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong>s of Creativity contest and make<br />

quality digital media happen. Videos were submitted<br />

that conveyed an <strong>in</strong>sight that could help teachers and<br />

students around <strong>the</strong> globe. (See <strong>the</strong> NextVista.org’s<br />

contest rules page to see what has been submitted)<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ners will be selected dur<strong>in</strong>g a Featured Session by<br />

Rushton Hurley titled (FS7315) The Magic of Digital<br />
