Connected Learning: Activating
Games, Design and Play
Design for connected learning requires tying together
research on how youth learn best with the opportunities
made available through today’s networked and digital
media. This talk will explore a set of guiding design
principles for the creation of connected, game-like
learning experiences that are socially-situated,
challenge-based and student-centered.
About Katie Salen:
Katie is a Professor in the School of Computing and
Digital Media at DePaul University and former Director
of the Center for Transformative Media at Parsons the
New School for Design, a research center focused on
emerging trends in design and media. She locates her
work in the field of game design and serves as the
Executive Director of a non-profit called the Institute of
Play that is focused on games and learning. She is also
co-author of Rules of Play, a textbook on game design,
The Game Design Reader, Quest to Learn: Growing a
School for Digital Kids, and editor of The Ecology of
Games: Connecting Youth, Games, and Learning, all
from MIT Press. She has worked as a game designer
for more than 10 years and is a former co-editor of
The International Journal of Learning and Media.

Introducing 2013 FETC one-hour poster sessions! This
is a new feature of FETC that will highlight innovative
schools and districts that have implemented exemplary
technology integration projects with success. Case
studies were selected to participate as poster
presentations based on their interest and value to
FETC community and its relevance and timely content
matter. These sessions provide opportunities for
attendees to engage in in-depth, informal discussions
with the presenters. Presenters post their displays for
attendee viewing, and are on-hand for discussion and
networking during the assigned session times.

FETC has partnered with NextVista.org, a free library
of creative, educational videos by and for teachers and
students everywhere, to promote the teacher strand
of the Mountains of Creativity contest and make
quality digital media happen. Videos were submitted
that conveyed an insight that could help teachers and
students around the globe. (See the NextVista.org’s
contest rules page to see what has been submitted)
Winners will be selected during a Featured Session by
Rushton Hurley titled (FS7315) The Magic of Digital
Video for Engaging Learning, where the audience
will choose the winner! Join the fun and attend this
session to pick the winner of the FETC Video Contest.
