EUCOMIS
§-EUCHARIS AMAZONICA
(YEW-kah-ris)
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Special Feature: Spectacular fragrant flower
Nickname: Amazon Lily
BULB COMPANIONS: OXALIS; BEGONIA; CALADIUM
OTHER COMPANIONS AND USES: ORCHID; FERN; TROPICAL OR
SHADE GARDEN; OTHER SHADE PLANTS SUITABLE FOR CONTAINERS
This lovely South American native produces
clusters of 3-5 beautiful, fragrant, narcissus-like,
white blossoms on 12”-16” graceful stems
with attractive, broad, glossy green leaves in late
summer. It responds best if grown in bright shade
with loads of water and regular feedings when
actively growing but prefers to be kept fairly dry
during dormancy. Since the bulbs will not tolerate
frost and resent being disturbed, in zones 3-8, it‛s
best to grow in a large
enough container for
future growth, which
will also enable you to
bring inside for the
winter where it may
bloom again if given
warm temperatures and
high humidity; requires
a long growing season to
flower; Pest resistant;
top-sized bulbs; 3-4 per Eucharis amazonica
sq. ft.; zones 9-10.
BRONZE FENNEL; LATE BLOOMING ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS
This amazingly easy and satisfying, critter
resistant, South African native has a conical
flower head filled with fragrant florets and topped
with a peacock tuft of green leaves, resembling a
pineapple. It‛s so eye-catching in our garden but
is also a striking centerpiece in containers on the
patio. Loves to be in full sun but doesn‛t mind
partial shade in regular,
well-drained garden
soil; its name translates
to ‘beautifully headed‛
which it really is! 3-5
