Native to China and the Himalayas and
grown for its interesting growth habit and foliage,
it looks a bit like a miniature fountain with cascading
‘sweet pea‛ or orchid-like flowers; flowers
bloom one at a time but continue to bloom from
mid/late summer through the fall; best planted on
a sheltered bank or a well-drained partly shady,
woodland garden with rich humus, acidic soil; wants
moisture when growing but was to be dry when
dormant; 1-3 per sq. ft.;12”-18”; top-sized root
stock; the books say zones 6-9 but we‛ve seen it
growing as a hardy plant in a garden in Toronto
Canada.

As its nickname suggests, these showy
orange flowers bloom all summer long on 2‛-3‛
stems and are shaped like chinese lanterns or
hanging bells. This plant seems to demand a Mediterranean-type
climate to perform; with those
conditions, will continue
to bloom profusely if
grown in extremely welldrained
soil and full sun.
Provide some support,
as it‛s a climber and
has tendrils which will
wrap around a trellis or
fence. Top-sized tuberous
roots; 1 per sq.ft.; z.

A very unusual,
shade loving plant
that produces a tubular
shaped, purplish green
flower with dark purple
markings which surround
a blackish purple central
spike, making the spike
look like it has been provided
its own vase. Following
the bloom of the
flowers, large, tropical
2‛-3‛, fingerlike, lovely
green leaves emerge
on 2‛ purple mottled
and speckled stems,
providing an umbrella
for its roots. Native to
tropical Africa and Asia,
Sauromatums normally
produce their flowers in
early summer and grow
2‛-3‛ tall leaves that last
all summer long; adds interest
in the garden early
summer - frost; 24+cm tubers; 3 per sq. ft.; zones
7-10.

of tiny florets with
prominent stamens
clustered in one orange-red,
softballsized,
bottlebrush,
round flower is so
eyecatching it wins a
place in many summer
gardens. This South
African native is 8”-
10” tall and provides
Scadoxus multiflorus
bright color in the
late summer garden.
Bold, showy, broad green leaves emerge after
the flowering is over.
Although it is said to
need partial shade, we
have this pest resistant,
adaptable plant
happily blooming in
full sun; blooms mid
summer; 16+cm bulbs;
3 per sq. ft.; zones 8-
10; has overwintered
in our zone 7 garden
with mulch and good
drainage.
