> Applicants from China accounted for about 5,000 <strong>PCT</strong> national phase entries in 2009 worldwide, an<br />

increase of 12.1% compared to 2008.<br />

> Applicants from all top 10 middle income countries reduced, sometimes drastically so, their national<br />

phase entries at offices worldwide compared to 2008; the only three exceptions were Argentina 13 , China<br />

and Malaysia.<br />

> In 2009, the highest number of <strong>PCT</strong> national phase entries originated in Europe, followed by North<br />

America and Asia. Respectively, they account for 39.1%, 32.3% and 23.9% of the world total, together<br />

representing over 95% of all <strong>PCT</strong> national phase entries worldwide.<br />

Even though Argentina is not a <strong>PCT</strong> member, their applicants can file <strong>PCT</strong> applications if at least one applicant is a resident or national of<br />

a contracting state.
