Guns, Gangs and Youth Violence Strategy. This
proactive plan was developed with community
input and identifies the roles and responsibilities
of a variety of stakeholders to achieve four main
goals – prevention, intervention, enforcement
and management. We are proud to advise the
strategy received international recognition at the
2007 International Association of Chiefs of Police
conference, winning the prestigious Webber Seavey
Award for Quality in Law Enforcement for promoting
best practices.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Traffic safety remains a top priority for York Regional
Police and 2007 saw continued success for many
of our programs and the embracing by the public
of several new ones. The Safe Roads…Your Call
campaign was and continues to be a resounding
success with York Region drivers. The program urges
motorists to call 9-1-1 if they see a driver they
suspect is impaired. Between June and December,
more than 1,164 drivers called 9-1-1, resulting in
135 arrests. That represents a 60 per cent increase
in calls and a 104 per cent increase in arrests over
the same period in 2006 and gives all road users the
chance to be involved in road safety.
PROACTIVE POLICING
Members of York Regional Police are addressing
residents’ concerns about crime in a number
of ways, including increasing the number and
availability of Scenes of Crime Officers, continuing
to decrease crime rates and improve clearance
rates, increasing police visibility and expanding
our intelligence-led policing programs. This report
details the many successful initiatives undertaken
by York Regional Police in 2007 to keep our
community safe.
