The five members of the Guns and Gangs Crime
Prevention Unit are tasked with bringing to
life the award-winning York Region Guns and
Gangs and Youth Violence Strategy, focusing on
reducing violence through proactive education and
enforcement.
The Crime Prevention Unit also includes designated
CPTED officers who educate local business owners
and the public on how to reduce their chances of
becoming victims of crime through the safer design
of buildings and landscapes.
New in 2007 was the introduction of two Chineselanguage
YRP Citizens Academy programs, a
community education initiative designed to provide
the public with a working knowledge of York
Regional Police. The program is offered directly to the
Chinese community in both Cantonese and Mandarin
and provides an opportunity for individuals to learn
about police practices and operations and discuss key
safety issues. The program will be offered in other
languages in 2008.
YOUTH PROGRAMS UNIT
Building partnerships and positive relationships with
youth are at the heart of our community programs
and Community Services officers are particularly
proud of the work they do every day to support and
educate young people within York Region.
In 2007, Youth Program officers, in partnership with
the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation,
developed the Future Aces Positive Ticket Program.
The program rewards young people for displaying
positive behaviour and making good decisions. The
