THE SEXUAL ASSAULT UNIT
The eight officers of the Sexual Assault Unit support
or conduct investigations of all sexual assaults,
sexual interference, sexual exploitation, invitation to
sexual touching and attempts, where the offender is
known or unknown to the victim or if known, has a
criminal history suggesting repetitive behaviour. The
unit reviews all sexual assault cases reported in York
Region and investigates the actions or activities of
suspected pedophiles. In addition, officers from the
unit provide training and education on sexual assault
investigations to police officers, support agencies and
community members.
SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS AND
SUPPORT
AUTO RECOVERY AND CARGO THEFT UNIT
Members of the Auto Recovery and Cargo Theft
Unit investigate organized vehicle or cargo theft rings,
including “chop shops,” auto wreckers, dealerships,
tow companies and incidents involving the theft of
heavy construction equipment and vehicles. The
11 members of the unit liaise with other police
organizations to share data and information on auto
and cargo theft-related crimes. In 2007, the unit
recovered 83 vehicles, 195 engines and 11 pieces of
heavy equipment, resulting in a total recovery value of
$3.7 million.
