INVESTIGATIVE SERVICES
Investigative Services operates three separate bureaus
investigating the most serious criminal offences. These
bureaus include Major Crimes, Organized Crime and
Special Investigations and Support.
MAJOR CRIMES
HOMICIDE AND MISSING PERSONS BUREAU
The 21 members of the Homicide and Missing
Persons Bureau investigate sudden or unexpected
deaths where foul play is suspected; missing, abducted
or kidnapped persons where the circumstances
indicate a strong possibility of foul play; assaults
where death is imminent; and unidentified bodies
where the manner of death is unknown or suspected
to be homicide.
There were five homicides in 2007 involving eight
victims, compared to nine in 2006 involving 12
victims. Of the five incidents in 2007, only one case
remains unsolved. Tragically, one homicide was the
death of York Regional Police officer, Detective
Constable Robert Plunkett.
Officers in the Cold Case Unit actively investigate
unsolved homicides and continue to solicit and
investigate information on cases dating back as far as
1956.
MAJOR CASE MANAGEMENT BUREAU
The Major Case Management Bureau provides
members of York Regional Police with operational
and administrative support for major cases that are
investigated at the District level or under the umbrella
of Investigative Services.
