Best. Summer. EVER.
Imagine a place where you achieve things you never dreamed you could do. Explore the galaxy, hit the trails on
horseback, navigate a kayak, learn to be a savvy traveler or write and star in your own movie. Those are just a
few of the adventures that await you. With a host of experiences to choose from – all designed with girl input –
Girl Scout camp encourages independence and develops character, while building confidence and a sense of
sisterhood. As you make new friends and build memories, you’ll find yourself having the . . . Best.Summer.Ever.
At Girl Scout camp, we:
• Develop courage, confidence and character
• Strengthen girls’ leadership skills
• Enhance connection to the natural environment
• Welcome all girls K-12
We offer day and resident camp sessions to fit every girl’s interests, abilities and dreams. Non-members simply
add $12 dues to the camp fee and enjoy Girl Scout membership throughout the year.
All Girl Scouts San Diego camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). This national
organization, which focuses on program quality and health and safety issues, requires camp managers to meet
Fees and financial assistance
Tiered pricing makes camp available for everyone
Our flexible, three-tiered payment program lets you choose the fee that’s best for
your family. Based on the honor system, this program helps us keep Girl Scout camps
available for every girl, regardless of her family’s financial situation. Assistance is
completely confidential; each camper participates equally in all camp activities. Please
pay Tier A prices (actual cost) whenever possible so we can continue to deliver firstrate
camp experiences through highly qualified staff and relevant programs at
well-maintained properties.
Price level options (included in each camp description)
Tier A
True cost of providing camp for a girl
Tier B
Partially subsidized price for families who cannot afford Tier A
Tier C
Heavily subsidized priced for those unable to pay Tier B
Financial aid For those unable to afford Tier C
To request aid:
• Mail, fax or deliver application with camp registration form and $25 deposit.
(Sorry, no online applications.)
• Wait for your acceptance notification. If the camper is not granted financial
assistance or is placed on a wait list, the deposit will be returned.
• Submit any balance due by Saturday, June 1.
Refund policy
Cancellations and requests for transfers or refunds must be done in writing.
• Cancellations: If you cancel your camper’s session, your deposit is non-refundable.
• Transfers: Because transferring between sessions is considered a cancellation of the
original registration, your deposit is non-refundable.
• Refunds (less deposit) are not available until at least three weeks prior to the start of
the cancelled session.
If a camper is not placed in any of her listed choices, all fees (including the $50 deposit)
are refunded.
Online camp photos and e-mail service
Enjoy an inside peek at your camper’s experience! We post photos to www.Bunk1.com,
a secure photo service. Parents have free access to view photos and may order prints
for a small fee. Resident camp parents may also purchase credits to send one-way
e-mails to their campers via Bunk1. Login information is provided in your confirmation
materials.
What if your girl earns a free five-day summer
camp experience by selling cookies?
Girls who sell 525+ boxes of cookies earn a free, five-day session at day or resident
camp. Eligible sessions are marked with a cookie symbol next to the description. A
reward notification and registration code will be mailed in April.
Optional: If you wish to register for a camp session before receiving your official
camp reward registration letter, you will be required to pay the standard $50 camp
is earned. However, if your girl does not earn the reward, you may apply the $50 to the
cost of regular camp fees.
find it fun to carpool together and share stories on the way home each day.
We registered…now what?
We will e-mail you a camp confirmation, an information guide and required paperwork
shortly after we receive your registration. The guide details what to expect at camp and
what girls need to bring. The camp director may also send a letter shortly before camp
begins with last-minute reminders and information.
What should my camper bring?
All girls need the following daily: A hearty lunch (refrigeration and microwave are not
available); refillable water bottle; sunscreen; lip balm; sturdy, closed-toed walking
shoes; clothing that can get dirty and a hat for hot days. Other items vary from camp to
camp, such as bathing suits, towels and bandanas. Refer to individual camp information
guide for other details.
What does the COV rate mean?
COV (child of volunteer) is a discounted rate offered to campers whose parents volunteer
for a week of day camp. For more information, please see the day camp volunteers
section on page 15.
What is the difference between day and resident camp Counselor-in-Training
(CIT) programs?
The day camp and resident camp CIT programs are completely independent offerings,
designed and implemented with the unique characteristics of each program in mind.
Advance training is required for day camp CIT only. For questions about day camp CIT,
contact Sandy Sultz at ssultz@sdgirlscouts.org or (619) 610-0814; for resident camp
Girls spend the rest of the day in our “camp” area of the ranch, enjoying crafts, games
and activities related to that week’s theme.
How do I enroll my daughter with a friend?
Adults: Volunteer for day camp!
Volunteers are essential to the day camp experience. Have as much fun as the campers,
while developing leadership skills, mentoring other girls, experiencing the outdoors
and making new friends! There is no cost to volunteer, and your child will receive a
significant discount on camp fees. Apply early for best placement options.
Volunteers with children at camp
A COV (child of volunteer) rate is listed for camps that use volunteers. To receive the
COV rate for your camper, you agree to work the full week of camp.
To volunteer: Register your child under the COV category to receive the discount. Then
complete the Day Camp Volunteer Application. A camp background check form will
be sent to you. If you are not selected to volunteer, your girl may attend camp at the
regular rate.
COV/Boy or Preschool indicates a camp that can accommodate male or preschool siblings
of campers, to allow their parents to volunteer at camp. The boys and preschoolers
enjoy activities in their own groups, with their own leaders. Please contact the camp
director for information.
Volunteers without children at camp
There are many ways for volunteers to help at day camp, for a few hours or for a full
week. You might help with science experiments, teach knitting, lead a sailing lesson or
provide logistic support to a director…it’s up to you! To learn more, contact Mary Mautino
at mmautino@sdgirlscouts.org or (619) 610-0719.
Day camp teen mentoring program
Day Camp Aides (DCAs) and Day Camp Counselors-in-Training (CITs) – formerly
known as Program Aides – are campers who support younger campers under the direct
supervision of adult staff. They provide a unique caring connection to campers. These
teen mentors can earn leadership and community service hours that fulfill Girl Scout
recognition and school requirements
Our day camp teen mentoring program now features two levels:
• Day Camp DCAs are girls entering grades 7-8 who help campers with crafts, games
and songs and assist unit counselors.
• Day Camp CITs are girls entering grades 9-12. In addition to providing general support
for younger campers, these seasoned, older girls also mentor DCAs. They have
opportunities to further their leadership skills by planning and executing program
activities for younger campers.
Prerequisite: Prior to serving at camp, all DCAs and CITs must complete training (see
page 16 for details).
How to become a Day Camp Aide or Counselor-in-Training
• Registration begins on Friday, Feb. 1 at www.sdgirlscouts.org/camp or via a camp
registration form.
• DCA/CIT day camps sessions are very popular! To allow as many girls as possible to
serve, registration is limited to two camps per DCA/CIT until Friday, March 1. After
that date, they may register for additional camps. DCAs/CITs are placed in camps on
a first-come, first-served basis.
• Contacting the camp director directly does not result in placement priority.
• Buddy requests by DCAs/CITs cannot be granted, due to the nature of the leadership
experience.
• Training sessions are detailed on next page; registration is online or via an individual
registration form.
• DCAs/CITs must attend the required trainings prior to their day camp sessions.
Check out camps for older girls! In addition to DCA/CIT opportunities, attend one or
more sessions designed for girls in grades 7-12.
DCA/CIT training
As much an educational opportunity as a requirement, DCA/CIT training builds skills
girls can use in other ways, such as helping a troop of younger girls, volunteering at a
service unit event or serving the community.
New DCAs must complete six hours of training. To transition to Day Camp CIT, girls
must complete an additional six hours of training. Training must be renewed every two
years. Camp-specific training and planning sessions are offered for some camps, as
well. The camp director will provide information regarding the availability of any campspecific
training.
Resident camps
At our summer resident (overnight) camps, girls get a taste of independence in a safe
and fun environment. Campers enjoy the best parts of being a kid, learning and playing
in groups where everyone belongs, trying new and different activities and exploring
nature hands-on. Camp sessions are centered around themes to suit every interest.
Songs, skits, campfires, laughter and friendship are all part of each girl’s experience.
Resident camps are:
• Held at Camps Winacka and Whispering Oaks in the mountains near Julian
• Open to all girls in grades 2-12
• Five, seven or 12 days long
• Supported by caring and enthusiastic, trained camp counselors
Based on the girls’ interests, each group of campers and staff plans its own activities,
including hiking, archery, nature activities, swimming, challenge course, arts and crafts,
sleep-outs and cookouts. Additional activities are offered based on the camp session’s
theme. Choose a theme with your camper by looking for activities she already loves or
has always wanted to try!
Camps Winacka and Whispering Oaks are located on the same 700-acre oak woodland
site near Julian, 60 miles east of San Diego. Bus transportation is available (for $15 per
camp) from Balboa Park in San Diego and Kit Carson Park in Escondido.
Camp Winacka
This traditional camp’s living units are tucked in the trees surrounding an open meadow.
Girls sleep in open-air cabins with built-in bunks or tent houses, or on cots under
the stars. All accommodations have modern bathrooms with showers and luggage
storage areas. Activities center around the lodge, dining hall, swimming pool areas and
environmental center. The camp boasts miles of hiking trails and natural sights.
Camp Whispering Oaks
Camp Whispering Oaks offers all the comforts of modern cabins in the beautiful
outdoors. Living and activity areas are connected with paved, lighted pathways winding
through natural vegetation of manzanita, oak and pine. The sports field and playground
are popular destinations for campers. Each living unit includes three modern cabins
with bunk beds and a nearby program shelter with modern bathroom facilities.
Resident camp staff
All counselors are age 18 or older and are selected for their maturity, enthusiasm and
experience. Many return year after year. Each summer, they participate in an intensive,
week-long training program in child development, group management, camping skills,
conflict resolution, bullying prevention, CPR/first aid and specialty areas. A health care
supervisor remains on-site 24 hours a day.
Camp communications
Parents have various options for communicating with their campers. They can write
and mail letters to camp, drop notes off at the bus to be delivered throughout the week
or sign up for www.Bunk1.com to send one-way e-mails to campers. Campers communicate
back to parents via postal mail.
In case of an emergency, call the Camp Information Hotline at (619) 610-0808 for
recorded messages about camp property status, evacuation sites and pick up
information.
Resident camp FAQs
Is there bus transportation?
Bus transportation $15 round trip is recommended for all campers. Girls start the camp
experience on the bus with camp counselors as chaperones. Many girls make friends
on the bus and look forward to it each year. Bus stops are located in Balboa Park and Kit
Carson Park. Confirmation packet includes maps, directions and more information.
How much time will my girl spend with horses at a horse camp?
Horse campers spend half their day working with horses and half participating in regular
camp activities. Each girl can expect to ride for approximately one hour per day, and
spend around two additional hours around the horses. We pride ourselves on giving
girls a well-rounded idea of horsemanship. Girls are responsible for all areas of horse
care including feeding and grooming, plus cleaning stalls and doing other barn chores.
Your confirmation packet will include specific information and a sample schedule.
What is the difference between day and resident camp
Counselor-in-Training (CIT) programs?
They are completely independent offerings, designed and implemented with the
unique characteristics of each program in mind. Advance training is required for day
camp CIT only. For questions about day camp CIT, contact Sandy Sultz at ssultz@sdgirlscouts.org
or (619) 610-0814; for resident camp CIT details contact Gabby Coburn at
gcoburn@sdgirlscouts.org or (619) 610-0816.
Do counselors sleep in the cabins with the girls?
It depends on the cabins. Whispering Oaks counselors sleep in cabins with the campers.
At Camp Winacka, counselors sleep in cabins with campers only for the Jumpstart
session. Winacka’s counselor cabins are within feet of campers’ cabins, and campers
are instructed where to find counselors if they need them. In “under-the-stars” accommodations
at Camp Winacka, counselors sleep near the campers, but in their own area.
What are the differences in accommodations?
All accommodations have access to flush toilets and hot showers.
• Modern cabins have heat, electricity and bunk beds, and sleep up to 16 campers.
• Rustic cabins are screened, open-air facilities with built-in bunk beds and no
electricity. They sleep up to eight campers.
• Under-the-stars campers sleep on cots on the deck of a central building that has
restrooms and a changing area.
How do I enroll my daughter with a friend?
If you register online, you will be prompted to supply a name of a “camp friend.” If you
register by mail, staple together both campers’ applications and payments. Girls may
pick just one “camp friend,” and that buddy must also choose them. Most campers do
not attend with a “camp friend,” so don’t worry if your camper doesn’t have one.
Can my daughter’s whole troop register together?
We do not recommend signing up more than two campers together. If a whole or partial
troop will attend camp together, we encourage you to sign them up for different programs
based on their own interests. They’ll still see each other during meals, at campfires,
and out and about around camp. Signing up separately allows them to experience
camp for themselves, while still sharing the adventure with their troopmates.
What should my camper bring?
We will e-mail you a confirmation, information guide and necessary paperwork when we
receive your registration. The guide details what to expect at camp, including what your
girl may need. Certain specialty camps, such as horse sessions, require additional or
specialty clothing or gear.
Can you accommodate my campers’ special (dietary, physical,
medical and/or emotional) needs?
With sufficient notice, we can accommodate most campers with special needs.
Contact the camp director in advance at campdirector@sdgirlscouts.org with specific
considerations. Upon request, a staff member trained in special needs may be available
for additional support. As always, fill out the health history completely to help us
best accommodate your camper.

Girl Scouts San Diego serves nearly 31,000 girls and more
than 10,000 adults in San Diego and Imperial counties. Girl
Scouts, a voluntary, private organization, is open to all girls
between the ages of 5 and 17 who make the Girl Scout
Promise, accept the Girl Scout Law, and pay annual membership
dues of $12. Girl Scouting encourages each girl to reach
her full potential by helping her develop self-esteem, make
new friends, and become a vital part of the community.
Girl Scouts San Diego Camps are accredited by the American
Camp Association. This means all our camps maintain high
safety and quality standards in site, program, transportation,
administration, personnel and health care.
ALL GIRLS WELCOME!
All girls ages 5 through 17 are welcome at Girl Scout camp. No camping
experience is needed for most camps, and a camper does not need to attend
with her friends or a troop—she’ll make new friends there! Non-Girl Scouts are
encouraged to attend; an additional $12 covers the annual Girl Scout
registration fee and insurance.
