‘I guess, at this point, the biggest risk I’ve ever taken with my look is not having had a facelift. Also, the first time I cut off all my hair. Every time I walked into a room people would gasp’ Years ago, I was asked to be the face of a fragrance from a different brand. My husband [Daniel Moder] asked, ‘What does the fragrance smell like’ and I said, ‘I don’t know. They haven’t sent it to me yet.’” And now La Vie est Belle is a best-seller. You must be proud of your involvement… “Well, I went into it without knowing how dog-eat-dog competitive the fragrance business is. So much time, money and effort goes into creating a scent, so I started to get nervous about the launch. I thought, ‘I hope this fragrance doesn’t go bust, because everyone has worked so hard on it.’ But I have to say, I take a lot of pleasure and joy in how incredibly successful the fragrance has become. It’s my mom’s favourite. Whenever her bottle gets low, she’s like, ‘Knock, knock.’” It’s formulated to make the wearer feel happy... “Yes, I take my happiness very seriously. We’ve had full-on conversations at Lancôme about happiness and what it means. It’s the thing we’re all searching for. If you’re happy, you always strive to refine and renew that state. It’s a constant pursuit, a constitutional right. I think one of the first steps to happiness is deciding that you want to be happy, but the bigger idea of it is that it’s a choice every day, in every hour.” What do you think of the new fragrance, La Vie est Belle L’Absolu Do you like the intense vanilla bean kick “Here’s the thing about vanilla: it transports all of us. It’s your grandmother, but it’s also your first kiss. It reminds you of going to your best friend’s house and her mother is making cookies. Then you become the mother who is making the cookies when your kids and their friends get home from school. So it’s all of those things; which is why vanilla makes everyone feel good in some way. Lancôme wanted the new version of the fragrance to have a drop of my essence and I said, ‘Let’s go for vanilla bean.’” You were the voice of Mother Nature in Conservation International’s Nature is Speaking video campaign. How important to you is respect for the natural world “Nature plays heavily in my life. I mean, there’s not enough attention and care that can be paid to nature. Everyone can do more to be aware of nature and not to be wasteful. My dream for La Vie est Belle is to start a recycling programme. We would allow people to bring their empty perfume bottle back to the counter and send it back to them filled with the fragrance.” What are your favourite beauty products at the moment “I love the new Absolue L’Extrait cosmetic water [Beautifying Lotion]. You expect it to be a basic face mist, but when it hits your face, you go, ‘Oh, wow. That feels great.’ It’s like walking into a field of flowers just as the morning dew has settled. But the real magic is in the black jar – the Absolue L’Extrait Regenerating Elixir. I went to a dinner recently and had a solid ten-minute conversation with a woman about how incredible this face cream is.” What makes you feel your most beautiful “Looking into the eyes of someone you love.” What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken with your look “I guess, at this point, the biggest risk I’ve ever taken is not having had a facelift. Also, the first time I cut off all my hair. I didn’t really think of it as a risk until every time I walked into a room, people would gasp.” Growing up, who did you consider beautiful “My mother and her liquid eyeliner. I loved when she applied it. I tried using it once and ended up with an eyeball full of eyeliner.” Which historical figure do you most identify with “I want to say Joan of Arc, but that will get lost in translation.” And who are your present-day heroes “Mothers who do what I do every day without the really great support that I have, or can have when I need it. The women who struggle to keep the insurance paid; the ones who don’t just get not to go to work because they want to stay home with the kids. That includes my girlfriends who do this with joy and grace and with long and full jobs.” Which qualities do you most admire in a woman “Aside from a hot ass, I admire transparency. I want to know who I’m dealing with. Don’t pretend to be a person and then turn around…” What do you most value in your friends “Honesty and compassion. I’m lucky to have such a beautiful group of friends. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.” Julia has been a face of Lancôme for nearly five years and her latest collaboration with the beauty company has been on the fragrance La Vie est Belle L’Absolu, which – after a suggestion from Julia – has a kick of vanilla because it “makes everyone feel good in some way” 115
