FORMER ‘EMMERDALE’ STAR ADELE SILVA SHARES HER BABY EXCITEMENT AFTER YEARS OF HEARTACHE 88 Adele and fiancé Oliver Farber (together left), who met in a Starbucks in Leeds, have been a couple for four years and got engaged last year on holiday in Rome. Oliver has supported Adele through three miscarriages. “I don’t know what I’d have done without him,” she says arm and cheery, former Emmerdale star WAdele Silva is sporting a neat 22-week baby bump and a healthy glow when she meets hello! for our exclusive interview. But she confesses she’s only just beginning to enjoy being pregnant. This is the fourth pregnancy in as many years for the actress, who played scarlet woman Kelly Windsor in the long-running ITV soap – three resulted in heartbreaking miscarriages. “I remember being on holiday in Italy and seeing babies and working out how old my baby would have been,” she recalls sadly of those difficult days. As a result, Adele, who turned 34 last week, has been understandably cautious. So anxious was she that, when offered the chance to return to Emmerdale for the final scenes of her on-screen sister Donna (played by Verity Rushworth) she turned it down as the dates coincided with the early weeks of her pregnancy, when she was advised to take it easy. “It sounds awful, but I wasn’t remotely excited before my five-month scan,” says the mum-to-be. “I didn’t want to think about it, just in case it was bad news. Now I’m excited, but I always touch wood. I know I’m extremely lucky to have got this far.” Adele and her businessman fiancé Oliver Farber kept the pregnancy news to themselves until the scan, when they learned that they’re expecting a little girl. “It’s the furthest I’ve ever been with a pregnancy,” says Adele, adding that the five-month scan was the most emotional part of her pregnancy journey so far. “It was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. “I never became bitter of anyone else being pregnant though. After each one of my miscarriages, I’d spend that day being upset, but then I’d put it away in a little box somewhere in my head, because I felt I needed to be strong for my other half as well.” STARTING OVER After so much emotional turmoil, Adele and Oliver decided to seek help earlier this year at the Zita West fertility clinic in London, whose clients have included Diana, Princess of Wales, the Countess of Wessex, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Stella McCartney. The couple were referred to Dr George Ndukwe, a specialist in recurrent miscarriages, and Adele underwent extensive tests. “I had 16 vials of blood taken, because they check for everything – they do tests that aren’t generally available in this country,” she explains. Adele was diagnosed with three conditions: a form of thrombophilia, which means her blood has an increased tendency to form clots; an underactive thyroid; and killer cells which, in the early weeks of pregnancy, regard the embryo as a foreign body that should be expelled. “It sounds bizarre but it was almost a relief when I was diagnosed. At least I knew what had been causing the miscarriages,” says Adele, who reveals that her mother suffered eight miscarriages and was also diagnosed with fibroids before she had Adele.
