NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR ONTARIO ARCHITECTS<br />

The Ontario Association of Architects had dinner in the Arts and Letters<br />

Club on Wednesday, March 28, when announcement was made of the winning<br />

design for the new headquarters of the Association* Over eighty members were<br />

present with George Gibson, President of the Toronto Chapter, presiding, Eric<br />

Arthur, Murray Brown and F, H, Marani formed the jury of selection and, after a<br />

considerable period of deliberation, the award finally went to the plan submitted<br />

by the John B, Parkin Associates, Toronto, Thirty-six plans were<br />

submitted, The new building at 50 Park Road, overlooking Rosedale ravine, will<br />

be constructed chiefly of glass and brick, For the dinner in the Club the walls<br />

of the Great Hall and the Stage were adorned by the competitive plans, most of<br />

them of such high merit that the jury had difficulty in making their decision.<br />

The designs were left on the walls for some days and attracted much attention.<br />

DRAMA FESTIVAL<br />

The University Alumnae Dramatic Club won the Hugh Eayrs Trophy for the<br />

best production in the Central Ontario Drama Festival, which was held at Hart<br />

House, Toronto, the week of March 12th, The play was "In Good King Charles 1<br />

Golden Days 11 by Bernard Shaw, directed by Club member Herbert Whittaker, Other<br />

Club members in the Festival were W. S. Milne, who directed North Toronto<br />

Theatre Guild production of "Ladies in Retirement" and James Dean, who directed<br />

"They Came to a City" for the Playcraftsmen.<br />

A radio version of Bertram Brooker 1 s novel "The Robber" has<br />

been broadcast recentlyj the Montreal Standard is, we understand,<br />

to publish a digest of it.<br />

CLUB PLAYS<br />

As members may remember, a notice was sent out by John Watson a short<br />

time ago advising that the Club was planning to produce a bill of one-act plays,<br />

and inviting interested members to attend an organization meeting, A number of<br />

enthusiastic thespians turned up at the meeting but unfortunately not a sufficient<br />

number to make it possible to carry out the original idea. However, it<br />

is now proposed to give three one-act plays at the Club, May 11 and 12, The<br />

plays are:<br />

"General Wolfe" - by Raymond Card, directed by Brownlow Card,<br />

"The Lotus" - a Conversation Piece, by J. R. K, Taylor,<br />

"Eros at Breakfast" - by Robertson Davis, directed by Stuart<br />

Parker.<br />
