O.S.A. AT NEW YORK<br />

Kenneth A# Greene, Consul-General for Canada in New York,<br />

formally opened the Ontario Society of Artists exhibition held during the<br />

first week of October in the American-British Gallery, New York. The display<br />

includes the wcrk of 38 representative Canadian artists and sculptors, *<br />

and on the opening day there were over 300 visitors • A picture by Jack<br />

Bush was immediately sold, and the N f Y* Art Digest in its latest issue reproduced<br />

two paintings from the exhibition «- a still life by Sydney Watson,<br />

and a portrait by Grant Macdonald* Cleeve H o m e , President of the O*S*A f ,<br />

was present at the opening and was much gratified by the reception accorded<br />

the display • His n Study of a Ballerina 11 was included in the exhibition<br />

President H o m e was the feature of an ABC television programme. This is<br />

the first display of Canadian art in the U t S* since the Canadian Society of<br />

Graphic Art in 1939 sent a display of work by 60 Canadian artists to the<br />

World 1 s Fair in Flushing Meadows.<br />

Members of the Arts and Letters Club who exhibited, in<br />

addition to those already referred to, were Fred Brigden, Bertram Brooker,<br />

A. J, Casson, Fred Finley, J* S # Hallam, P# Haworth, J# Martin, Rowley<br />

Murphy, L. A* C f Panton, George Pepper, R* York Wilson*<br />

ARTISTS<br />

York Wilson has just returned from a four months visit<br />

to Mexico. While there he did a lot of painting and we understand has a<br />

very impressive collection of work as a result,<br />

Nick Hornyansky*s color aquatint, Winter Silence, which<br />

was shown on the Club walls last May, has been chosen as the honorary<br />

members 1 print of the year by the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and<br />

Engravers*<br />

Fred Brigden is scheduled to speak on Canadian Art en<br />

October 17th at Armour Heights School, Wilson Avenue, Tcronto f<br />

The first exhibition of the season in Alumni Hall, Victoria<br />

College, is that by A. J« Casson, President of the Royal Canadian Academy,<br />

and includes a number of his latest landscapes*
