“The key to everything we do is our people. Ensuring their safety is far and away the company’s most important goal.” Allan Campbell, chairman & CEO Construction Lucas Stuart, our construction division, has spent the year on a diverse range of major new construction projects in hospitality, healthcare, commercial, retail and defence. It’s also contributed to our work on Queensland’s Western Corridor. Hospitality The first stage of the $77 million Merivale Group’s Ivy complex opened in December 2007, immediately gaining a reputation as one of Sydney’s hottest venues. Ultimately the complex will comprise 18 bars, nine restaurants, the 509 m 2 Ivy Room and a 1,500 m 2 retail precinct in two buildings on George Street. The construction challenges numerous levels, a range of bespoke finishes and a complex back-of-house with ten cellars, nine commercial kitchens and office spaces. The staged handover has been carried out in close collaboration with Merivale, giving them a return on the project months earlier. The building has an Australian Building Greenhouse Rating of 4.5/5. Lucas will also be an occupant, with our own head office moving into one of the towers. Retail We’re nearing completion of Fisherman’s Wharf at The Entrance on the NSW Central Coast, an eco-friendly foreshore complex with around 20 specialty retailers and restaurants. Healthcare & medical research Lucas Stuart has undertaken three significant projects in the healthcare and medical research field during the year. An operating theatre for Castle Hill Hospital, completed over Christmas 2007. A research facility for the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, with laboratories, lecture facility, office and support spaces. For Catholic Healthcare, we’ve carried out renovations and extensions to their aged care community in Coffs Harbour. The infrastructure Team All divisions of Lucas are integrated to deliver the range of skills needed for major infrastructure projects. So, for instance, Western Corridor has required work from our Pipelines, Construction and Trenchless Technology teams. All working in close coordination to deliver the project. Commercial Hyundai Motor Company’s new $70 million Australian HQ at North Ryde is nearing completion. The complex, with two office towers above a common ground floor and underground parking incorporates offices and training facilities for staff and dealers including a workshop, library, auditorium and classrooms. Government & defence We completed a reconstruction of the small-bore rifle range at RAAF Richmond. Civil infrastructure Our biggest civil project over the year has been the $25 million Sydney City Marine Slipways development under Sydney’s Anzac Bridge. This will be the largest marine service facility on Sydney Harbour when it’s completed later this year. The project includes a range of construction challenges: a marine component including eight berths for vessels up to 60 linear metres, 800 and 100 tonne ship lifts, 6,200 m 2 of open hardstand, 3,200 m 2 of covered hardstand for all-weather work. Apart from the marine facilities, the project includes restaurants, office and commercial spaces. 14 LUCAS group
