DEAN’S MESSAGE A Whale of a Blessing
The last week of December
of every year, without
fail, television networks local
and national, do stories about
significant events of the past
year in review. Here in Los
Angeles, a local station highlighted
noteworthy stories of
the decade in review.
One particular story
touched and inspired me very
deeply. It happened on Dec.
13, of 2005 and reported in
great detail by the San Francisco
Chronicle and other
outlets in the national media.
It seems that just east of the
Farallon Islands facing San
“Lent and Pascha
is a time for
us to ‘swim’ in
our own joyous
circles of
Thanksgiving,
acknowledging
our Rescuer,
and Savior,
Jesus Christ.”
Francisco (outside the
Golden Gate), a 50 ton female
humpback whale had
become entangled in a spider
web of crab traps and lines.
She was weighed
down by hundreds of pounds
of traps that caused her to
struggle to stay afloat. She
also had hundreds of yards of
line rope wrapped around her
tail, her flippers, her torso
and a large line tugging in her
mouth. A fisherman spotted
her and radioed the U.S.
Coast Guard and the Marin
County Marine Mammal
Center, an environmental
group for help.
Within a few hours, a
rescue team of nine master
divers arrived and determined
that she was so bad off with
wounds and deep gashes over
her entire body that the only
way to save her was for the
rescuers to dive in the
choppy sea and untangle her.
They worked carefully for
hours with curved knives and
eventually freed her. When
she was free, the divers say
she swam in what seemed
like joyous circles. She came
back to each and every one
of them and nudged them
gently around as though…
she was “thanking them.”
The divers said it was the
most incredibly beautiful experience
of their lives. The
man, who cut the heavy rope
out of her mouth, said her
eyes were following his every
move the whole time, and he
will never be the same.
I Googled the story
to get the details I am sharing
with you and the more I read,
the more my eyes teared up
and I began to see a very
deep spiritual parable in this
event that applies to each of
us as we begin to enter the
Lenten Season and look forward
with anticipation to
Pascha and the message of corruption
and death overcome
and human deliverance assured.
In reality, humanity,
you and I are metaphorically
that whale. We are trapped and
entangled and weighed down
by sin…by what the Holy Fathers
of our church call the
“passions”…and they are
many. The “crab lines and
traps” that choke us are greed,
avarice, excessive pride, uncontrolled
ego, gluttony, self indulgence,
an assortment of lusts,
hate, gossip, malice, violence,
the idolatry of things in our
shallow materialistic culture
and so much more that only
our hearts acknowledge in the
sleepless nights of our existence.
It is then when our conscience
wakes us up to our
own personal entanglements
and life choices. In the middle
of the night our wounds become
so self-evident. In the
middle of the night our souls
sigh for relief.
The writer of the Epistle
to the Hebrews 12:1, reminds
us that we are to “lay
aside every weight and sin
which so easily ensnares us and
let us run with endurance the
race that is set before us.”
But the good news of
Lent and Pascha is that God
our heavenly Father saw us
drowning and struggling to stay
afloat in the dark sea of our
sinful nature. He saw us entangled
by the traps, lines and
hooks of the devil. And He
sent us the master rescuer, His
only begotten Son our Lord
Jesus Christ who dove into the
heavy murky seas of our fallen
and drowning state and by the
cross carefully cut away and
continues to cut away the myriad
of death lines and traps of
sin and corruption from our
wounded souls. What an ineffable
miracle! What an act of
Love of eternal and cosmic
proportions!
Lent and Pascha is
a time for us to “swim” in
our own joyous circles of
Thanksgiving, acknowledging
our rescuer, and savior,
Jesus Christ. He is the
sinless Master Diver who
dove into our humanity and
assumed our nature so that
we would not drown in the
abyss…the darkness and
isolation of hell. He has set
us free and healed our self
inflicted gapping wounds.
That is why we can totally
agree with St. Gregory of
Nazianzus when he said:
“He who is without
flesh becomes incarnate:
the Word puts on a body;
the Invisible is seen: he
whom no hand can touch is
handled: the timeless has a
beginning; the Son of God
becomes the Son of Man—
Jesus Christ, the same yesterday,
today and for ever.
Light from light, the Word
of the Father comes to his
own image, man. For the
sake of my flesh he takes
flesh; for the sake of my
soul he is united to a rational
soul, purifying like by
like. In every way he becomes
man, except for sin.
O strange conjunction! The
Self-existent comes into
being; the Uncreated is created.
He shares in the poverty
of my flesh that I may
share in the riches of his
Godhead.”
To our Master Diver be
the glory, Thanksgiving and
honor forever and ever.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our “heartfelt”
appreciation to all Stewards
who have sent in their
pledges.
It is easy to see that
we need your help to
achieve our goals; we pray
that you will find it in your
heart to give cheerfully and
without reluctance to the
sacred work of God’s Holy
Church. The economic
times are affecting everyone,
but we must remember
how important it is to
continue our support of our
Cathedral. “And the work
of generosity shall be
PEACE and the EF-
FECT of generosity will
be QUIETNESS and SE-
CURITY for EVER”
Isaiah 32:17
For those of you
who have not pledged yet,
we would appreciate you
doing so as soon as possible,
so we can formulate
our operating budget for
the year.
Thank you for your
generosity and support to
our Stewardship Ministry.
Last month due to
a heavy schedule and other
obligations, I omitted my
message for the February
edition of the Herald. I
would like to take this belated
opportunity to officially
congratulate all of
Saint Sophia Cathedral
Dance Groups who participated
in this year’s Folk Dance
and Choral Festival in San Jose,
California.
Keravnos, Fourtouna
and Kymata competed in various
categories and represented
the Cathedral with honor and
pride. All three groups were
given medals for their excellent
dancing. The Cathedral honored
all of our dancers, their
Directors and Parental Support
group which was then followed
by a special fellowship luncheon
sponsored by the dancers’
parents.
I would like to express
my sincere gratitude to the
Dance Directors as well as to
the Parent Support Group for
their hard work and dedication
to this worthy Youth Ministry.
BRAVO!!
Earlier this year, as
you may know by now, we lost
our dear friend and long time
co-worker Keith Strong. In
the February issue of the Herald,
we shared with you several
articles chronicling his life and
pictures of his ever-smiling
personality.
This month, I am
pleased to reveal that a ‘Faith
in Stone’ plaque will be placed
in memory of Keith, sponsored
in cooperation with our
Ladies of the Philoptohos, the
Foundation and the Parish
Council. The plaque will be
with us and the generations to
come for eternity. The inscription
on the plaque reads:
“From the rising of the sun to
its going down The Lord’s
name is to be praised”
Ps.113:3
Also, as a special note
our Dance Groups are establishing
a Scholarship in memory
of Keith Strong, which will
be awarded annually to one
student from the Cathedral and
one from the BLQ community.
Contributions for the
Scholarship Fund in memory
of Keith are now being accepted.
Please call our Accounting
Office with your
donations. We thank you for
your anticipated generosity.
“May his memory be eternal”
I would like to extend
sincere congratulations
and good wishes to our new
Choir Director, Jim Kollias,
who has accepted the position
to lead our choir to new
heights. Jim is not new to our
community and he has been
the Assistant Director for the
choir for several years. He is
a gifted Music Teacher at a
high school in Tustin California
and we are pleased to
have him lead the choir for
many years to come. AXIOS!
Kathara Deftera – Clean
Monday- was celebrated here
at the Cathedral with a Compline
Service, followed by a
Lenten luncheon sponsored
by our wonderful Philoptohos
VIP Ladies.
This year Pan Orthodox
Hierarchical Divine
Liturgy was celebrated at
Saint Stevens Serbian Church
with presiding Bishops: His
Eminence Metropolitan
Gerasimos, His Grace
Bishop Joseph, His Grace
Bishop Maxim and His
Grace Bishop Benjamin.
A fellowship reception
followed the Liturgy
hosted by the Ladies Guild of
St. Stevens and with participation
of our Philoptohos
Ladies. Thank you for all you
do.
Here at the Cathedral,
we also celebrated the
traditional Sunday of Orthodoxy
on the same day.
As we enter the first
several days of Lent, please
remember to check the entire
schedule of the Liturgies offered
here at the Cathedral
including the Heretismous
on Friday nights leading to
Palm Sunday on March 29 th
followed by Holy Week, the
Crucifixion of our Lord and
His Glorious Resurrection.
Our traditional
Easter Picnic will be celebrated
again this year in Pasadena.
Please offer your help
by volunteering a few hours
at the picnic. Come show
your support and help us offset
the costs of hiring help.
Thank you.
Please remember
that in order to have your
event or message included in
the Monthly Herald all materials
must be submitted
to our office no later than
the 8 th of the previous
month. All Ministries and
Organizations of the Cathedral
must take special note of
this cut-off date. We do
NOT want to leave anyone
out, but we must adhere to
the deadline of our publishers
in order to insure that we
have a timely delivery to our
parishioners’ homes. Thank
you for your cooperation and
understanding.
The Joy of Belonging
Through Christian Stewardship
Herald
The central vision of Stewardship is to promote Christian Stewardship as a way of life, assist our parishioners to
identify their God-given gifts, and encourage them to offer their time, talents and treasure to support our Saint
Sophia Ministry – our place of belonging.
“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give,
not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
II Corinthians 9:7
The tremendous response from our parishioners during the month of January is a welcome blessing to the many
needs of our Saint Sophia home. We express our heartfelt thanks for your kind generosity, and ask the rest of
our parishioners for their participation in order to meet our annual financial obligations of $1,600,000. We are
equally grateful to all of you who returned your Volunteer Opportunities forms and encourage others, including
our current volunteers, to please return your forms, as we are in the process of implementing a Volunteers’ Database
to support the needs of our ministries.
Regardless of what your volunteer and financial commitments to the parish for this year will be, we thank you in
advance for your consideration and support.
With Gratitude,
As we head into
2010, wrapping up the
“Evening with Friends”
event honoring Chris
Julias, which was really
delightful, it is impressive to
see how Saint Sophia
Philoptohos carries forward,
working on several
projects at the same time.
Now we are proud
to announce that the
Mother of the Year 2010 is
Pauline Evangelatos, a
lady who has been a loyal
and faithful Philoptohos
worker for many, many
years. Congratulations to
you, Pauline!
Like last year, the
Mother’s Day Luncheon
will be held at the Sheraton
Universal Hotel. This
year’s date is Saturday, May
8, 2010. The event committee
is hard at work to
produce a fabulous afternoon
for all.
The National
Philoptohos was one of the
first organizations to send
help to the victims of
Haiti’s tragic earthquake on
January 12th by supporting
IOCC’s international ecumenical
effort that deliv-
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
ered water purification and
sanitation equipment for
10,000 Haitians with the first
arriving provisions on January
18. Our national office is
urging all Philoptohos Chapters
to continue donating to
the National Office, payable to
the National Philoptohos Haiti
Disaster Fund.
Easter is early this
year, April 4th, and we are already
planning for the Pastry
Booth at the Easter Picnic. We
need volunteers to prepare and
sell the pastries. Please contact
Diane Pruett for more information
on how you can volunteer.
On Sunday, March 14,
the General Meeting of Philoptohos
will be held immediately
after the Services at the Parish
Hall. We are having these
monthly meetings regularly
after Church in order to accommodate
our members who
cannot attend the traditional
morning meetings that are held
on alternate months.
The article that appeared
in the February Herald
about the “Evening with
Friends” honoring Chris
Julias was very well reported,
but a bit early…Alas! Indeed
the party was fantastic. Full
of sentiment and love, outstanding
music and dancing…
it was simply an evening
of fun for all. I couldn’t
have described it better!
Thank you, Timi, for your
A frail old man went
to live with his son,
daughter-in-law, and
four-year old grandson.
The old man’s hands
trembled, his eyesight
was blurred, and his step
faltered. The family ate
together at the table, but
the elderly grandfather’s
shaky hands and failing
sight made eating difficult.
Peas rolled off his
spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the
glass, milk spilled on the
tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law
became irritated
with the mess, “We
From PHILANTHROPIA
THE WOODEN BOWL (Submitted by an internet friend of Philanthropia, Inc.)
must do something about
father,” said the son,
“I’ve had enough of his
spilled milk, noisy eating,
and food on the floor.”
So the husband and wife
set a small table in the
corner. There, Grandfather
ate alone while the
rest of the family enjoyed
dinner. Since Grandfather
had broken a dish or
two, his food was served
in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced
in Grandfather’s direction,
sometimes he had a
tear in his eye as he sat
alone. Still, the only
words the couple had for
him were sharp admonitions
when he dropped a
fork or spilled food.
The four-year old
watched it all in silence.
One evening before
supper, the father noticed
his son playing with
wood scraps on the floor.
He asked the child
sweetly, “What are you
making” Just as sweetly,
the boy responded, “Oh,
I am making a little bowl
for you and Mama to eat
your food in when I grow
up.” The four-year old
smiled and went back to
work.
The words so struck
Herald
the parents that they were
speechless. Then tears
started to stream down
their cheeks. Though no
word was spoken, both
knew what must be done.
That evening the husband
took Grandfather’s
hand and gently led him
back to the family table.
For the remainder of his
days, he ate every meal
with the family…and for
some reason, neither husband
nor wife seemed to
care any longer when a
fork was dropped, milk
spilled, or the tablecloth
soiled.
On a positive note:
I’ve learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems
today, life does on, and it will be better tomorrow.
I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by
the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly,
lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I’ve learned that, regardless of your relationship with your
parents, you’ll miss them when they’ve gone from your “life.”
I’ve learned that making a “living” is not
the same thing as making a “life.”
I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with
a catcher’s mitt on both hands…You need to
be able to throw something back.
I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you,
but, if you focus on your family, your friends,
the needs of others, your work and doing
the very best you can, happiness will find you.
I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with
an open heart, I usually make the right decision.
I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.
I’ve learned that every day, you should reach out and touch
someone… people love that human touch holding hands,
a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn.
I’ve learned that you should share this with
everyone you care about…just as we did.
A very relevant
thought…
I guarantee you
will remember
the tale
of the
Wooden Bowl
tomorrow, a
week from now, a
month from now,
a year from now.
God bless all my
family and
friends in whatever
it is that
You know they
may be needing
this day!
Amen

Contribute to Pennies & Prayers
A penny is a gift, a prayer of thanks, a reminder
that we come together to further the work
of Christ our Lord.
Pennies & Prayers is a Commission for Orthodox Missions and
Evangelism (C.O.M.E.), which is all about bringing Christ to
our neighbor. Without these funds our missions throughout the
world will not be able to preach the gospel nor provide for
many needy people. Your family’s spare change can help support
our current mission parishes and begin new ones. Keeping
a jar in the home is a way to remind ourselves of Christ’s calling
to go to all people everywhere and make them His Disciples.
How to Participate in “Pennies & Prayers”
1. Please make a donation today! Any amount is welcome.
2.Take home a “Pennies & Prayers” canister from the office and
place your spare change into the canister. The whole family is
encouraged to participate. Return the filled canisters to the
church office in care of Philoptohos. All proceeds will be sent
to “Pennies & Prayers” to continue this valuable work for our
Orthodox missions. Make this valuable work a family project!
