4.12 Timer Operation<br />

An <strong>in</strong>ternal timer can be configured <strong>to</strong> operate <strong>in</strong> one of three different modes or types. These are Dwell Timer,<br />

Delayed Switch on Timer and Soft Start Timer and are described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g three sections. The timer types are<br />

configured by ‘P’ code P41 section 5.2.15.<br />

The Timer Resolution is configured us<strong>in</strong>g ‘P’ code P42.<br />

4.12.1 Dwell Timer<br />

A dwell timer is used <strong>to</strong> control a process at a fixed temperature, set by SP1, for a def<strong>in</strong>ed period.<br />

When Run is selected <strong>the</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t will servo immediately <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> current PV, and <strong>the</strong> display will show rUn<br />

immediately.<br />

If setpo<strong>in</strong>t ramp<strong>in</strong>g is enabled, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t ramps <strong>to</strong> SP1 at <strong>the</strong> set rate.<br />

Tim<strong>in</strong>g starts when <strong>the</strong> temperature is with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> threshold of <strong>the</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t, set by parameter ‘t.thr’ <strong>in</strong> Opera<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Level 2. If <strong>the</strong> threshold is set <strong>to</strong> OFF <strong>the</strong> tim<strong>in</strong>g starts immediately. Heat<strong>in</strong>g or cool<strong>in</strong>g will come on as appropriate<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tim<strong>in</strong>g period. Once <strong>the</strong> timer is runn<strong>in</strong>g, it will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> run even if <strong>the</strong> temperature falls below <strong>the</strong><br />

threshold.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> timer has timed out <strong>the</strong> controller behaviour depends on <strong>the</strong> configuration of <strong>the</strong> END state parameter.<br />

This is set up <strong>in</strong> Conf Level us<strong>in</strong>g P code ‘P43’.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> timer completes its dwell, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strument will be put <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Standby mode. The output power will<br />

be set <strong>to</strong> 0%, and <strong>the</strong> standard home display will display PV and OFF <strong>in</strong>stead of setpo<strong>in</strong>t. The PV will revert<br />

<strong>to</strong>wards ambient s<strong>in</strong>ce no power is be<strong>in</strong>g applied.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> timer completes, <strong>the</strong> target setpo<strong>in</strong>t will switch <strong>to</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t 2. Setpo<strong>in</strong>t 2 may be a lower or a<br />

higher temperature. If <strong>the</strong> Setpo<strong>in</strong>t Rate Limit is enabled, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> controller will ramp <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t 2 at<br />

<strong>the</strong> SPrr rate. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this ramp, <strong>the</strong> Timer status will <strong>in</strong>dicate RUN. Once <strong>the</strong> setpo<strong>in</strong>t 2 is reached <strong>the</strong><br />

status will change <strong>to</strong> EnD. This configuration can be used <strong>to</strong> provide a simple ramp/dwell/ramp/dwell<br />

sequence.<br />

Dwell. When <strong>the</strong> timer completes, <strong>the</strong> controller will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> control at setpo<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Reset. The timer will reset on completion revert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> SP1.<br />

Notes: The dwell period can be reduced or <strong>in</strong>creased while <strong>the</strong> timer is runn<strong>in</strong>g by adjust<strong>in</strong>g t.re (Time Rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g)<br />

<strong>in</strong> Level 2.<br />

The parameter t.thr is a deviation band from setpo<strong>in</strong>t value. It is set by <strong>the</strong> user <strong>in</strong> Level 2. Tim<strong>in</strong>g starts when <strong>the</strong><br />

process value reaches <strong>the</strong> deviation limit. Because it is set as a deviation band <strong>the</strong> operation will apply <strong>to</strong> both<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g (heat<strong>in</strong>g) or decreas<strong>in</strong>g (cool<strong>in</strong>g) values.<br />
