TRADITION AND FOLKLORE
Whether on the threshing floor, in the meadow by the spring or in the courtyard of the
bridegroom’s house, the tanac has been danced to the sounds of the sopile and mih. The tanac
is a traditional island dance that was danced both by peasants - powerfully and broadly - and
the nobility - gracefully and seductively.
There are folk ensembles on Rab that preserve the tradition and pass it on to the youngest
generation. In this way its uniqueness is preserved, together with its connection to its roots.
One form of traditional song has survived thanks to the klapsko (a cappella) singing that has
managed to keep step with modern life. There are no less than three male klapa ensembles
and one female on Rab. Klapa concerts and the occasional performances by folklore
ensembles are an opportunity for tourists to also get to know part of the national cultural
tradition of Rab.
