A couple of recent call‐outs involving fires have provided a salutary reminder of the importance and usefulness of smoke alarms. Please
take care to check that your smoke alarms are working – they can literally mean the difference between life and death.
Here’s some advice from the New Zealand Fire Service website (www.fire.org.nz/Fire‐Safety/Safety‐Devices):
• Place smoke alarms on the ceiling, since smoke rises and this will give you the earliest warning
• For optimum smoke detection, long life photoelectric smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, living area and
hallway in the house
• At an absolute minimum, a long life photoelectric smoke alarm should be installed in the hallway closest to the bedrooms.
