We really appreciate all the work it takes to raisethese funds.Hay Fever – (Nothing to sneeze at!)What is it?Hay fever is another term better described as “SeasonalAllergy”. An allergy can be thought of as an immuneresponse by our body to something that is not actuallydoing us any harm. For example, some people have areaction when they eat peanuts that causes their faceand eyes to swell and in some cases can be lifethreatening if their airways should start closing andfilling with liquid. You probably know someone who isallergic to wasp or bee stings. The sting itself is notlethal, but the reaction can be. With an allergy, thebody misinterprets a foreign substance that has enteredour body (an allergen) and generates a response to riditself of that substance. In the case of airborne pollenthe body typically makes a response within the mucousmembranes that come in contact with the pollen: theeyes, nose, and lungs. Consequently, the eyes andnose swell and become watery; the lungs can constrictand cause cough, sneeze and wheezing. This is anattempt by the body to push pollen out of the body, eventhough the pollen isn’t causing any real harm. Manypeople do not have allergic reactions to pollen and donot suffer any harm by not having hay fever. However, those that have serious hay fever can be incapacitatedfrom working, be unable to sleep due to wheezing andeven have temporary visual impairment due to wateryeyes and be unable to drive or operate machines.to shrink blood vessels that have expanded in responseto histamine. They are related to adrenaline andinclude pseudoephidrine and phenylephrine. The sideeffects include increased heart rate and feeling nervous.Sometimes anti-histamines and decongestants aloneare not enough. Topical steroids can also be applied tothe eyes, nose and the lungs in the form of sprays orinhalers. These medicines have both preventive effectsand also immediate anti-inflammatory effects once theallergic reaction has occurred. These steroids are tryingto stop both histamine release and the inflammationassociated with allergic reactions. In some severecases an oral steroid is used to stop a severe allergicreaction, but the use of oral steroids is limited as theycan cause harmful side effects if over used.Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicines likeIbuprofen and Voltaren can also be used to control hayfever by decreasing inflammation and limiting symptomslike sore throat and head ache. Side effects of NSAIDsinclude stomach ulcers and increased blood pressureand fluid retention. When wheezing and sleep are a problem due to hayfever, medicines called bronchodilators are used toopen the airways. Proventil and Ventolin are commonbronchodilators. The side effect of these medicines isthat they can speed-up the heart rate and interfere withsleep as well.ConclusionHay fever is problematic but rarely ever dangerous. Formild hay fever using a facemask when working in grassor simple over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants and NSAIDs may be all you need to getthrough the season. If hay fever becomes severe youshould see your doctor to help you find one of the manymedicines that can help relieve your symptoms.TREVOR DEVINE FENCING20+ Years Experience Fencing & Post Driving10 Ton Digger – Tip TruckPhone 315 6389 or 207 435 9493How does one treat Hay Fever? The treatment is basically to stop or limit the body’sreaction to airborne pollen without causing a bad sideeffect to the medicines. The key molecule to controlhay fever is called histamine. Histamine is the moleculethat is released from a cell that causes the swelling andwatering associated with hay fever. The most commonanti-histamine medicines include loratadine, fexofenadine, cetirizine, chlorpheniramine (trade names:Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra, etc.). These medicines try tostop histamine from being released. Therefore theyneed to be taken BEFORE the reaction. Mostantihistamines produce some sort of drowsiness.Everyone reacts differently and if you are operating avehicle you should be aware of the degree to which anyanti-histamine affects you.Decongestants are another group of medicines that try

Air8tors are a New Zealand Biological Fertiliser company based in Tauranga, which has arevolutionary way of delivering essential nutrients, biology and metabolites directly topastures and crops in a stable form. In this day and age of high costs and environmentalawareness, farmers need to be thinking smarter and about their environmental impact.Air8tors give you the best of both worlds, high yields and production in a cost efficient waywhile looking after your children’s legacy.SoilM8 is a Soil Culture, that contains biologically processed nutrients and minerals, readily available for immediate uptake by the plant. This aids in stimulation of microbialactivity in the soil. The end result is improved pasture establishment & performance, stockhealth and crop vigour, yields and quality.SoilM8 contains a rich source of nutrients, trace elements, vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, Humic & Fulvic acid and general growth promoters, which are all pre-digested by beneficial organisms.Because of the above biological process, everything is inside the biomass of theorganisms, which in turn makes everything far more unleachable and plant available. Thisis due to the organisms attaching themselves to the soil particles and becoming part of thesoil itself and naturally releasing nutrients when required, not when they are forced into theplant by other artificial means.SoilM8 is designed to complement the efficiency of most fertilisers, including solidfertilisers, effluent ponds, composts and chicken manure. SoilM8 is not designed to beused solely on its own. Some features are:• Reduce mineral inputs i.e. solid fertiliser costs.• Can retain free nitrates into biological forms more suitable for pasture growth.• Rebuild the soil structure and diversity of biology.• Initiates microbial activity in effluent ponds to break down solids and algal growth to enhancethe natural nitrifying bacteria that are normally suppressed in most oxidation ponds.• Reduces odour by promoting aerobic biology• May reduce soil nitrate leaching by organically stabilising nitrogen.• Compost activator.• Builds carbon in the soil.• Increase worm numbers• Reduce thatch that harbours eczema spores.• Can be applied through irrigation.• May aid in reducing somatic cell count.Air8tors can assist in customising a fertiliser programme for your specific needs. For more information contact the numbers below.Available from:Mark Deed on 0274 777 727 Or 0800 424 788Email mark@air8tors.co.nz
