Waiau - Sunday 8th May at 12 noon
FROM THE VICAR – HEALING IN TIMES OF
DISTRESS Many of us have been deeply affected by the
tragic events in Waiau last Friday. For this weeks article I
simply want to repeat a few psalms for you to dwell on
and see how so relevant timeless and comforting Gods
word is. Psalm 23 'The Lord is my Shepherd , I shall not
be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he
leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He
guides me in paths of righteousness for his names sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod
and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table
before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my
head with oil my cup overflows. Surely goodness and
love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell
in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 46 God is our
strength and refuge an ever present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and
the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its
waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with
their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad
the city of God the holy place where the Most High
dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help
her at break of day. Nations are in uproar , kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord almighty is
with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see
the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on
the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the
shields with fire. Be still, and know that I am God; I will
be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the
earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is
our fortress. And Psalm 121 I will lift my eyes to the hillswhere
does my help come from My help comes from
the Lord the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let
your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber
nor sleep. The Lord watches over you - the Lord is your
shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by
day or the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all
harm - he will watch over your coming and going, both
now and for evermore. Misfortune may well befall us but
in the midst of it like in the eye of the hurricane there is
peace, that’s what I see God offering us in this
community at the moment. I hope and pray the psalms
have comforted you, we don’t understand every word but
God comforts us through them. If folk would like their
own Bible do contact me at the Vicarage. So fancy a
yarn or a flat white Taking cake or muffin orders, maybe
even a pie to order So if you need to get something off
your chest the Vicarage door is an open door or I'll come
to you Warmest Blessings and prayers Craig
Minister/Vicar.
AMURI COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE
OPTOMETRIST
Ian Buchanan from ‘Buchanan Optometrists’ will be
holding a clinic at the Health Centre on Thursday 26 th May
2011.
As well as vision assessments and optical dispensing he
can offer:
• Civil Aviation Authority special eye reports
• Driver’s vision assessments
• Police vision assessments
• Employee Eye Examinations
• Now able to provide free of charge eye
examinations and free spectacles (from a
selected range) for children under 16 who have a
community services card.
Please ring the Health Centre for an appointment ‐ ph 315
6328.
Why are we promoting this
• Children and young people are vulnerable to Influenza
and present the greatest risk of spreading the disease
in the community.
• Preventing Influenza will reduce the amount of time
missed from school especially as the school year has
already had a major disruption.
• Any reduction in influenza rates potentially prevents
hospital admissions, particularly important this year
with reduced bed numbers.
• The people of Canterbury will be more exposed to
cold, overcrowding and stress making them more
vulnerable to Influenza.
NEW DOCTOR
We are delighted to let you know that once his immigration and
work visa have been processed, Dr Michael (Mike) Silvers will be
joining our team as a permanent (at least two years) doctor in
November. We will continue to provide you with a choice, with
Dr Graeme Scrivener working two days a week (plus after hours
on call & skin clinics) & Dr Mike Silvers working three days a week
(plus after hours on call and special clinics).
Mike has been living in Las Vegas for the last six years, working in
primary care and running his travel medicine clinic. Mike is
married to Nika, who is an occupational therapist. They will live in
the doctor’s house in Rotherham. Mike loves music; he plays
piano and guitar. He is also a golfing and scuba diving enthusiast.
Mike has had an extremely interesting career, having served with
the US Peace Corps and worked in Africa, South America, the
Pacific and Eastern Europe. His ability to speak Spanish,
Portuguese, Fijian and some African languages will be of
assistance with our broadening range of patients from other
countries. Mike loves being involved in communities and is really
looking forward to making a contribution to ours.
In the mean time, we continue to have Graeme working Mondays
to Wednesdays, and Buzz Burrell working Thursdays & Fridays
until the end of June. Then Graeme will work Mondays and
Tuesdays with Richard McCubbin working Wednesdays through
Fridays until the end of November. Please contact us on 315 6328
to make an appointment.

Why do I need to service my car
Where do I begin A lot of people have
recently been “saving” on having a service,
and just opting for the warrant. In these
economic times, it is easy to understand
why. But now we are faced with another
dilemma. The Japanese earthquake.
Prices for second hand vehicles doubled in
Japan overnight. This is going to have an
effect to increase the second hand prices in
NZ again. In the medium term, the car not
worth fixing last year, may well be worth
fixing this year. The vehicle fleet in NZ will
age even further. Most vehicle
manufacturers are now scheduling their
service intervals at 15 – 20,000kms. The oil
quality has a bearing on this, but it is mainly
done for marketing reasons. Nearly any
vehicle will do its first 10,000kms with very
little servicing. It’s after this period that the
real costs will be incurred due to a lack of
servicing ie. premature oil seal/gasket
failures, stretched timing chains, and even
“check engine” lights come on. There is a
whole heap of other stuff that can be
prematurely worn, or cause expensive
repairs. For most of us who purchase a
vehicle and intend to keep it for a
reasonable period of time, we believe a
regular maintenance plan is needed. At
Mockett Motors, we can help you with this,
cos that is what we do!
