BINNA BURRA Binna Burra contained highly fragmented but significant areas of remnant native vegetation-Big Scrub rainforest remnants including fragments of riparian rainforest (Table 8.1, Map 3). Remnant rainforest vegetation supports a number of Threatened flora and fauna species (see list below). Rehabilitation, enlargement of remnant areas and reconnection between remnants is recommended (Section 7). Fencing and rehabilitation of riparian areas should also be encouraged. MIDGEN FLAT The lack of Threatened flora and fauna species records reflects low survey intensity in the area. Midgen Flat contained potential habitat for a number of Threatened species. Areas on Shire boundaries require assessment on an inter-shire basis. Midgen Flat is a potential habitat link between Newrybar swamp in Ballina Shire and the Broken Head habitat block. 50. BROKEN HEAD–BYRON HILLS This area included Broken Head, Taylors Lake and Byron Hills and contained a high diversity of vegetation associations (Map 3) including subtropical rainforest, Brush Box forest, wet to moist sclerophyll forest, swamp sclerophyll forest, banksia shrubland and sedgeland. Broken Head-Byron Hills has been identified as containing core areas of native vegetation (Table 8.1). The area provides a link between Broken Head NR and the Cape Byron-Tallow Creek area. Broken Head mainly comprises metasediments with aeolian influence. The vegetation at Broken Head included old growth coastal Blackbutt and mixed eucalypt forest, Brush Box forest and Hoop Pine rainforest. A high number of Threatened flora and fauna species exist for this area. The area has been identified as containing core native vegetation (Table 8.1). Byron Hills included areas of rainforest on basalt-enriched sand below the escarpment and on basalt soils on the escarpment area. A high number of Threatened flora species were recorded in this area. Taylors Lake-Batsons Quarry included a mosaic of swamp sclerophyll forest, sedgeland, banksia shrubland and moist sclerophyll forest. A number of Threatened flora and fauna species exist for this area. 247
