UMSL Interlocking
• Scope – The UMSL Interlocking project consists of the construction of a new universal
mainline crossover (Interlocking). The average separation of mainline crossover tracks on
the Phase 1 MetroLink Alignment is approximately 2 miles. However, over the subject
segment of the alignment, the distance between the North Hanley and Page Interlockings is
4.2 miles. Installation of the new interlocking will provide much needed operational
flexibility with regard to maintenance and incident management. Metro manages all aspects
of the design, material procurement and construction of multiple bid packages for civil, track,
traction power, signals, and communications work associated with this project. The location
of the planned UMSL Interlocking is just south of the existing UMSL South MetroLink
Station.
• Budget – The total project budget is currently $9,931,880. The original budget was
$8,487,106. The low bid to perform all work associated with this project was $9,700,000, in
December 2010. Metro made the decision to cancel that solicitation and take on the
management and coordination of all project disciplines in the interest of minimizing cost. By
breaking the project into discreet construction and procurement packages, Metro is on track
to realize roughly $2,000,000, in overall project savings.
• Schedule - Civil and Track Installation work are currently under contract and actively
working. Both of these disciplines will complete in the third quarter of 2012. The Signal
Installation contract is waiting to be awarded and represents the project critical path,
completing in February 2013.
