A German firm has recently patented a<br />
“nocturnal milk” product with claims it<br />
contains high levels of the sleep-regulating<br />
hormone melatonin. How do they do<br />
it Special food is given to cows and<br />
they are milked at night. Munich-based<br />
Milchkristalle GmbH states their theory<br />
behind the nighttime milk product lies<br />
in the belief that by milking their cows<br />
between 2 and 4 a.m., the animals produce<br />
more melatonin than during the daytime.<br />
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced<br />
by the body and used by the brain to<br />
regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Doctors often<br />
recommend supplements of melatonin for<br />
people who have jet lag or work odd shifts.<br />

the melatonin<br />
production, the<br />
herd of 1400 cows<br />
are fed clover and<br />
soothed under<br />
warm red lights<br />
to lower stress<br />
levels while being<br />
milked. During<br />
the day when the<br />
weather is good,<br />
the pampered<br />
animals are turned<br />

out in a pen with grass and deep, cozy sand,<br />
which the workers call “cow beach.”<br />
That milk is then freeze-dried, packaged<br />
and sold under the brand Nightmilk<br />
Crystals which can be mixed with milk or<br />
yogurt. (The product is not sold in the U.S.,<br />
though the company does sell it online).<br />

inventor Tony Gnann says his studies show<br />
that giving cows different care and milking<br />
them during the middle of the night<br />
