Thanksgiving toms through time<br />
Thanksgiving 2010 is a distant memory and<br />
those involved in the turkey industry have had<br />
the opportunity to reflect on the events leading<br />
up to the biggest day of the year for old tom<br />
the turkey—Thanksgiving. Market behaviors<br />
are analyzed, discussed and, slowly but surely,<br />
a picture begins to develop of the occurrences<br />
which most affected commodity turkey values.<br />
For 2010 the biggest influences were the<br />
excellent movement of whole turkeys in fourth<br />
quarter 2009, the low year opening inventories<br />
that resulted, and the production constraint<br />
that kept them there. From any vantage point<br />
2010 was a year of historic proportions. Strong<br />
market prices and surprisingly active demand<br />
were hallmarks. All time high commodity prices<br />
were set, broken and re-established. As for whole<br />
turkeys it was one for the records. Consumer<br />
through institutional sized birds reached new<br />
market heights. Although the year is young,<br />
2011 is exhibiting many of the same early year<br />
atributes as 2010. Will whole body toms have<br />
