Graeffe’s Sea Cucumber<br />
Pearsonothuria graeffeii<br />
This common <strong>sea</strong> cucumber is usually found during <strong>the</strong> day and night on <strong>the</strong> <strong>shallow</strong> forereef<br />
slope to at least 30 m depth. It grows to about 30 cm in length and is mottled brown, black and<br />
white. Its large, flat tentacles are distinctive, jet black and edged in white. From juvenile size<br />
until it is a few cm in length, it is strikingly coloured in black and white with bright yellow<br />
conical papillae, resembling a toxic phyllidiid nudibranch. This species has Cuvierian tubules,<br />
but ejects <strong>the</strong>m only after considerable irritation.<br />
