Published weekly for Port Authority and PATH employees March 20, 2008/Volume 7/Number 12
Achievements
Perfect in Treasury
Port Authority Treasurer Anne Marie
Mulligan honored the 13 Treasury staff
members who achieved perfect attendance
in 2007, at a breakfast last week at
PA headquarters.
“Perfect attendance is a direct
reflection of dedication and commitment,”
Ms. Mulligan said. “That’s why we recognize
these employees – because they
personify it.”
Leading the group – with 31 consecutive
years – is Tom Trimarchi. He is
followed by Frantz Bricourt with 21 years,
Mark Carrillo with 14, and Allan Svidro
with 12.
Port Has Another Record Year
New Jersey
Governor Jon
S. Corzine
joined Chairman
Anthony R. Coscia,
Executive Director
Anthony E. Shorris,
First Deputy Executive
Director Susan Bass
Levin, Port Commerce
Director Rick Larrabee
and other Port Authority
executives at the
Elizabeth Marine
Terminal today to
announce record cargo
volume at the Port of
New York and New
Jersey in 2007.
The Governor and the PA executives
also detailed the expansion
efforts at the port and the steps being
taken to ensure it remains a major
economic generator for the region.
Those steps include adding 119
acres on the eastern end of the Port
Jersey peninsula for the potential
redevelopment of new container
space; completing the ExpressRail
on-dock rail system by 2011; and
other elements of the port’s $2 billion,
10-year capital plan.
“Even during times of economic
uncertainty,” Governor Corzine said,
“the port has been a lifeline for this
region, providing a continuous source
of jobs and economic activity. For that
reason, we must protect this critical
asset and move forward with a clear
vision for the future.”
Chairman Coscia said, “Year after
year, more and more cargo is making
its way to our port, creating hundreds
of thousands of jobs and providing
this region with a major economic lift.
At this morning’s news conference in Elizabeth are (from left)
Governor Corzine, Mr. Coscia, Ms. Levin, Mr. Shorris, and Mr.
Larrabee. Oceanborne cargo volume in the Port of NY & NJ
grew 4 percent last year, outperforming other major ports
nationwide. Containerized cargo grew 7.6 percent.
That’s why over the next
10 years we’ve committed $2
billion in the port’s infrastructure –
an investment that we believe will
pay substantial dividends now and
for years to come.”
Mr. Shorris noted that more than
$166 billion in cargo flowed into the
port in 2007. “We handled all that
cargo while also taking 610,000 truck
trips off the region’s roads with our
ExpressRail system,” he said. “Our
port is going to continue to grow,
which is why we need to build on the
ExpressRail vision to create a truly sustainable
port, one that is as sound
environmentally as it is economically.”
“Most people in our region only
know the port as the odd-looking
cranes they see from the Turnpike,”
Ms. Levin said. “What they don’t realize
is how much the port impacts their
everyday lives, bringing in everything
from the sneakers on their feet to the
food on their tables, generating more
than $20 billion in economic activity
and 230,000 good, quality jobs.”
Employee Profile: Al Anton
Title: Project
Coordination
Supervisor, Capital
Project Management
Division, PATH, since
January 2004.
Residence: Jersey
City, NJ.
Joined the Port
Authority: July 1984.
First job: Audit
Trainee, then up to
Senior Audit
Supervisor; then
Acting Manager,
Management Analyst.
Duties: Manage various commercial
and financial aspects of PATH’s Railcar
and Signal System Replacement
Program.
Most challenging aspects: “What I
call the 3 C’s – maintaining communication,
cooperation, and commitment
from stakeholders and participants,
both internal and external, for the
information and deliverables you need
to complete responsibilities and make
decisions within time constraints.”
Personal interests: “I like listening,
sports, photography,
festival-going,
sightseeing, and
contributing time
and talent.”
Thoughts about
the job:
“Being involved in
the renaissance of
PATH, our 10-year,
$3.3 billion investment
plan, is both
a humbling and a
fulfilling experience.
The PA is
such an amazing
and momentous organization when
you think of its mission, role, and
impact in the region. One needs to
step back and look at all the various
types of industries in which it is
directly involved – and appreciate
how much it contributes to the bistate
region and local economy.
“As a staff member of the PA, you
are given the opportunity to work,
learn, or specialize in these industries.
Few other organizations can offer that
kind of experience.
“From a career standpoint, I look
forward to the next level of opportunities
to contribute to the goals of the
PA and PATH.”
See Anyone You Know
Marilyn Schultz sent in
this photo of an orientation
class in 1969 at Port Authority
headquarters at 111 Eighth Avenue in
Manhattan.
“The class was called Junior Secretarial
Training, given by the Personnel
Department,” wrote Ms. Schultz, who
retired in January 2007.
“It was given to new employees, telling
you all about the company, the rules, and
all that the PA offered and expected of you.
It would be fun to see how many staff
members see themselves in the picture.
I am sure some are still with the PA.”
