May 29 to thank staff members for
their efforts to achieve ISO certification
for the department’s Environmental

SmartLink Use Surges
Half of PATH’s 240,000 weekday riders
now use the reusable SmartLink card, making
it the interstate rapid-transit system’s primary
fare-payment method.
MetroCards are used by 38 percent of
customers, followed by QuickCard, with
nine percent, and single-ride ticket at three
percent.
One of SmartLink’s most attractive features
is that it allows customers to replenish
it online with a credit card or to have it
replenished automatically.
The popularity of SmartLink will allow
the Port Authority to phase out QuickCards
by the end of this year.

TEB Awards
9 Scholarships
Nine college-bound seniors
from high schools near
Teterboro Airport each
received $1,500 Community Benefit
Fund scholarships on June 3 at a
luncheon ceremony at the airport.
Airport Manager Rich Heslin said
the funds come from the annual
Teterboro Airport Golf Tournament,
which is supported by the entire
aviation community at TEB, and that
the scholarships are awarded “to gifted
local students pursuing advanced
education in aviation, engineering,
mathematics, or science.”
He noted that TEB has been
awarding the scholarships for 23 years.

An EMS that meets the requirements
of ISO 14001:2004, according
to the International Organization for
Standardization, is a management tool
enabling an organization to “identify
and control the environmental impact
of its activities, products or services;
improve its environmental performance
continually; and to implement
a systematic approach to setting
environmental objectives and targets,
achieving them, and demonstrating
that they have been achieved.”
“This is not the end of our effort,”
Mr. Larrabee said, “but a significant milestone
on our continuing journey. It’s all
about continuous improvement, and we
will need to maintain that certification by
continually improving our EMS.”
