Published weekly for Port Authority and PATH employees December 21, 2006/Volume 5/Number 51
Holiday Message from the Chairman and
The Executive Director
Dear Colleague:
Thanks to you, 2006 was a year of remarkable accomplishments by The Port Authority of New York
and New Jersey.
It was a year in which we assumed responsibility for much of the rebuilding at Ground Zero,
including the Freedom Tower, and began construction of the World Trade Center Transportation
Hub, the foundations of the Memorial Museum, and other buildings at the site. Just this week,
we witnessed the installation of the Freedom Tower’s first steel column.
At John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia airports, we handled
more passengers than any other airport system in the nation. We also made major
strides on important infrastructure and capacity enhancements designed to accommodate
this growth, including a “topping off” ceremony in October for the new
Terminal 5 at JFK, awarding four contracts for the modernization of Terminal B at
EWR, and launching a $15 million study on redeveloping the Central Terminal
Building at LGA. At Teterboro Airport, we helped forge “A Pledge to the Community,”
a series of initiatives to address aircraft noise, safety, and security.
The PATH rapid transit system introduced a major enhancement in customer
service – PATHAlerts, an e-mail subscription service for notifying riders of train
delays and service changes. Final design of the new railcar fleet and the first phase
of the new signals project also were completed.
Chairman Anthony R. Coscia and
New Jersey Governor Jon S.
Corzine on Monday announce
recommendations of task force
the Chairman established on
ways to enhance security at the
nation's 361 seaports.
Mike Dombrowski
On Monday we announced the recommendations
of our public–private task force to greatly
enhance security at our port and nationwide.
Among them are mandatory cargo security
standards, the appointment of a national official
in charge of port security issues, and a port
user fee to help offset escalating port security
expenses.
Executive Director Kenneth J. Ringler
Jr. speaks at Tuesday’s installation of
Tower. With him on the dais are
George E. Pataki, Mayor Michael R.
Bloomberg, and Governor Pataki’s
Chief of Staff, John Cahill.
At the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, berth and channel deepening projects
were completed, affording direct access to deeper-draft vessels. Also completed
was the rail connection between the Staten Island Railroad mainline and the
Chemical Coast Line in Elizabeth, linking Howland Hook with the national rail network
and setting the stage for rail service to begin in the first quarter of 2007. At the
Elizabeth Marine Terminal, we expanded ExpressRail capacity by 30 percent, and in
Brooklyn, we invested $56 million for a new, modern Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in time
for the 2006 season.
Continued from page 1
At the Goethals Bridge, November 18 saw the last full closure of the eastbound
roadway for the $63 million contract to rehabilitate the span’s deck and structural
steel. At the George Washington Bridge, we completed the massive job of applying
more than 36,000 gallons of paint to the New York and New Jersey towers. At the
Lincoln Tunnel, we opened the facility’s new Traffic Management Center, and at the
Holland Tunnel, we achieved full implementation of the facility’s Intelligent
Transportation System.
Our OECM initiative helped us find innovative ways to reduce administrative
costs and operating expenses while enhancing customer service, resulting in $150
million in annual savings. And our agencywide Customer Care Program of standards
and training of our staff and our partners’ staffs have already produced a growing
population of satisfied customers.
We wish you a safe and joyous holiday season, and a new year of accomplishments
as dramatic as the last.
Granting Winter
Wishes
Through participation in New
York Cares’ Winter Wishes
Program, Real Estate and
Development staff members were
able to fulfill the holiday requests of
more than 30 disadvantaged adults
and children.
“Our gifts helped nine families now
residing at the Sammon Build Center,
a transitional facility for homeless families
in the Bronx, and provided 12
children from these families with toys,
warm clothing, and other presents to
brighten their holiday season,” said
Chief of Real Estate and Development
Michael Francois.
“Our gifts also answered requests
made in letters sent to Santa by 12
children involved in programs sponsored
by SCAN New York, an organization
that works with ‘high risk’
children and families contending with
poverty, parental substance abuse,
homelessness or domestic violence,”
he said. “This was our first year participating
in the Winter Wishes Program.
We hope to expand our involvement
in the program next December.
I especially appreciate the efforts of
Barbara Berko, who initiated our
involvement in this program, for
reminding us of what this season is
really about.”
