TCWESTBANK; Beginning with the Synagogue and
ending with the Dome of the Rock, this course will
analyse artistic developments in four different religious
currents of Late Antiquity. That period sees the rise of
figural art and architecture in Judaism and Christianity,
new artistic developments in a Paganism possibly
inclining toward monotheism, and finally the earliest art
inspired by the third great monotheistic religion, Islam.
We will consider what the art tells us about the
development of separate identities or interactions. We
will note the inspiration of religious texts, including
NeoPlatonist writings, the various Biblical and
apocryphal texts, the Talmud, the Koran, but also
emphasize the role of art in satisfying needs that
supplement or depart from those outlined in texts.
