100 Years and Count<strong>in</strong>g<br />

By April Hall<br />

MICHAEL BROWN P’83 started work<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

<strong>the</strong> family pharmacy as a teenager. He is<br />

now <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> Andrew Brown’s Drug<br />

Store, celebrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess’s 100th<br />

anniversary this year.<br />

“We lived above <strong>the</strong> pharmacy,” Brown<br />

said. “I have n<strong>in</strong>e bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters—<br />

I’m one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger ones—and we all<br />

worked here at one time or ano<strong>the</strong>r.”<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce tak<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess from his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, Brown has, with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> his<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong>corporated and expanded <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g next door to <strong>the</strong> pharmacy where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sell durable medical goods.<br />

Expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong>fered its own<br />

challenges, Brown said, but diversify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was one way to make a local neighborhood<br />

drug store viable.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r way Brown hopes to make his pharmacy<br />

<strong>in</strong>dispensable is by <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> personal<br />

care faceless mail-order companies cannot.<br />

“I th<strong>in</strong>k more than anyth<strong>in</strong>g, more than<br />

cha<strong>in</strong> stores <strong>in</strong> every section <strong>of</strong> town, it is<br />

<strong>the</strong> mail order that has really taken over,”<br />

Brown said. “Be<strong>in</strong>g able to call and talk to<br />

<strong>the</strong> pharmacist about any questions people<br />

may have is important. It’s def<strong>in</strong>itely<br />

an elderly population here <strong>in</strong> Scranton,<br />

Lackawanna County, and <strong>the</strong>y’re not<br />

comfortable us<strong>in</strong>g mail order.”<br />

Brown’s pharmacy also <strong>of</strong>fers special services<br />

that <strong>in</strong>clude mak<strong>in</strong>g deliveries to local nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

homes and fill<strong>in</strong>g clients’ pillboxes each<br />

week to avoid dosage confusion for <strong>the</strong> elderly.<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g forward, Brown says he hopes<br />

Andrew Brown’s Drug Store will last ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

100 years. Whereas his sons are pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

careers <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r fields, two <strong>of</strong> Brown’s<br />

nephews are currently study<strong>in</strong>g pharmacy.<br />

Perhaps, <strong>the</strong>y will carry <strong>the</strong> torch <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

next century.<br />

Just <strong>the</strong> Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

By April Hall<br />

“Lots <strong>of</strong> women come to me after<br />

<strong>the</strong>y’re f<strong>in</strong>ished hav<strong>in</strong>g kids. It<br />

would help <strong>the</strong>m even more if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y came to see me even before<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir first child.”<br />

- CARRIE JAMES PAGLIANO MPT’99<br />

CARRIE JAMES PAGLIANO MPT’99 (DPT,<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> St. August<strong>in</strong>e for Health<br />

Science) has a bor<strong>in</strong>g story <strong>of</strong> why she<br />

went <strong>in</strong>to physical <strong>the</strong>rapy, or so she says.<br />

She was always <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> sports <strong>in</strong> high<br />

school and hoped to comb<strong>in</strong>e her love <strong>of</strong><br />

sports and <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. That’s it;<br />

no story <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>jury or battl<strong>in</strong>g back<br />

through pa<strong>in</strong>ful sessions <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

<strong>the</strong>rapy herself.<br />

But that’s not where her story ends. Now<br />

a mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a 14-month-old son, she works<br />

part time at Medstar Georgetown <strong>University</strong><br />

Hospital <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C., and specializes<br />

<strong>in</strong> women with postpartum issues, from<br />

pelvic pa<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence to low back pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Many women believe <strong>the</strong>se issues are <strong>the</strong><br />

price <strong>the</strong>y pay for hav<strong>in</strong>g babies, Dr. Pagliano<br />

said. “They th<strong>in</strong>k, ‘My mo<strong>the</strong>r was like this; my<br />

grandmo<strong>the</strong>r was like this.’ Lots <strong>of</strong> women<br />

come to me after <strong>the</strong>y’re f<strong>in</strong>ished hav<strong>in</strong>g kids.<br />

It would help <strong>the</strong>m even more if <strong>the</strong>y came<br />

to see me even before hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir first child.”<br />

She said her studies at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>the</strong>n later at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

St. August<strong>in</strong>e for Health Science, where<br />

she earned a doctorate degree, began her<br />

education, but be<strong>in</strong>g pregnant herself put<br />

her over <strong>the</strong> top.<br />

“It’s one th<strong>in</strong>g when you learn all <strong>of</strong> this<br />

<strong>the</strong>oretically,” Dr. Pagliano said. “Once you<br />

have your own child, however, that’s <strong>the</strong><br />

most <strong>in</strong>valuable education I’ve ever had.”<br />

Dr. Pagliano said many <strong>of</strong> her patients<br />

(she also works with men recover<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

prostate surgery) come to see her through<br />

word <strong>of</strong> mouth as opposed to referrals<br />

directly from <strong>the</strong>ir doctors.<br />

But that may change as more <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

works its way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream, she said.<br />

Dr. Pagliano <strong>of</strong>ten talks with physical <strong>the</strong>rapy<br />

students, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those from <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong><br />

specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> women’s pelvic conditions.
