Dear People of St. Patrick:
April 24, 2011
Easter Sunday
Alleluia! The Lord is Risen! It is true! In my name and in the name of our parish staff here at St. Patrick, I wish
you and all your loved ones Easter peace and joy. A special welcome to those visiting us from out of town, to those
coming to worship with us for the first time, and to those who are finding their way back to the Lord. The joyful
music echoing in our church, the beauty and smell of fresh flowers that adorn the altar, the large Paschal Candle that
burns brightly in our sanctuary, and the newly blessed Easter water available to all remind us that the Lord’s spirit is
indeed alive among us!
I want to thank all those who made our Lenten journey together and our Easter celebration so special this year. So
to those who planned all of our services, especially our Liturgy Team, to all those who decorated our church,
especially our Art and Environment Committee, to our choirs and musicians, to our servers, lectors, Eucharistic
Ministers, ushers, our parish staff, and to those who helped to “spring clean” our Church, especially Dale Hennebry,
Carol Zagorski, Michelene Rocco, Mary McCarthy and Rose Hamker, I say may God bless you and reward you all for
your generous spirits.
Please help me welcome our newest parishioner, Meagen Keene. Meagen was fully initiated into our faith
tradition on Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil. Her picture and “spiritual bio” appear later in this bulletin. As you see
Meagan and Michael, her husband-to-be, at church and around town, please make them feel welcome among us in the
true spirit of St. Patrick.
Please remember in your hearts and prayers all of our young people who will be making their First Holy
Communion over the next couple of weekends. May we rejoice with them and help them to always feel welcome at
the table of the Lord.
Finally, please mark your calendars for our 20 th Annual St. Patrick’s Irish Open Golf Outing. It will take place on
Friday, July 22 nd at the beautiful Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. Details about this event can be found on our parish
insert this weekend. I do know you will have a fun time. My job is to “take care” of the weather with a lot of help
from the Lord!
God’s blessing of Easter peace and joy in the week ahead,
Father Kurt
JOY WITH NO END
Now let the heav’ns be joyful,
And earth her song begin,
The whole world keep high triumph
And all that is therein;
Let all things in creation
Their notes of gladness blend,
For Christ the Lord has risen,
Our joy that has no end.
EASTER SUNDAY Page 3
Meagan Keene
My first experience with the Catholic Church was when I was baptized as an infant in
accordance with my mother’s parents wishes. The only memory I have of the Catholic
faith was when I asked my grandfather, my Opa, about a signed picture he had hanging
on his wall of a man dressed in robes with a funny looking hat. He explained to me that
the man was Pope John Paul II and told me that because he was the only polish pope it
meant a great deal to him. That was the extent of my exposure to the Catholic faith.
For reasons unknown to me I decided to attended a Catholic and Lasillain University
where religious classes where required. I had two wonderful teachers; the first taught a
class titled Searching for Faith which gave me the opportunity to explore many
religions and learn more about each which led me to my second instructor who taught
Old Testament in a way that made it fun and understandable in today’s world. At this
same time I met the man that I will soon be marrying and I attended mass with him for the first time in my life. I was
very lost during that first mass and all I kept thinking was boy this is a lot of up and down, but the more we went the
more I caught on and enjoyed going to mass on Sundays.
At this point Mike and I had discussed how we would want to raise our future children and Mike had expressed how
important it was for him to have his children be active in church, so I decided that I wanted to understand every aspect
of the Catholic religion so that one day I would be able to answer the questions that my children might ask and I looked
into RCIA. After about the third week though things had changed and I told Mike that I was no longer doing this
because I wanted to be sure I could encourage my future children to attend church but that I was doing this for me,
because I felt like I belonged here.
We choose St. Patrick because the very first mass we attended was Fr. Kurt’s shoulda bag and the homily made me
laugh but also changed my view on priests as my past interactions made them seem like they thought that they could do
no wrong yet Fr. Kurt was standing before me admitting that he had made mistakes. The community at St. Patrick
made me feel so welcome that I turned to Mike and said this is our church, this feels right.
Water Facts
Before starting this week let the fact be stated that water
is often collected after it is used, in one form or another.
It is also known that some of that water goes down
storm drains and is not efficiently captured. There will
be information about how some water is used and
reused by industry later in this series. This is not to
scare people but to make all of us aware of the usage
and value of water.
Between 1900 and 1936, clean water in U.S. cities
cut the rate of child deaths in half.
Water required to maintain a typical Las Vegas golf
course: 2,507 gallons for every 18-hole round of
golf. Each hole of golf, for each golfer requires
139 gallons of irrigation water.
Cooling water in a typical U.S. nuclear power plant
requires 30 million gallons per hour. (This
water is recycled and small amounts are lost.
The Chicagoland area is powered mainly by a
ring of nuclear power plants. Illinois is home to
6 active plants currently and one inactive plant.
Microchip factories require water that is so clean it
is considered dangerous to drink.
STEWARDSHIP
"If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is
above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth." -
Colossians 3:1-2
Easter is a good time to recommit ourselves to a
simpler lifestyle – concentrating more of our efforts on
what God wants from us and less of our efforts on what
we want for ourselves. Jesus sacrificed everything for
us. What can we sacrifice, not just at Lent, but every
day, so that we can better serve Our Lord
