Perspectives From Fr. Kurt: Our Parish Family
Dear People, Family, Friends and Neighbors of St.
Patrick:
I want to again take this opportunity to
thank Patty Krengiel for her willingness
to step up to the pulpit and share from
her heart, her spiritual journey and her decision to
become a Catholic Christian last year at Easter Vigil
among us. I know some of you are out there
questioning where God is calling you. How can you
make a true difference in the world and make it a
better place? If you are asking questions like this,
please explore them deeper. Those are “God
Questions” as I call them. Feel free to connect with
me, Patty, Doreen at St. Alphonsus, our local
coordinator on the Tri-Parish level, or someone you
feel “walks the walk” of faith. God, I
believe and trust, will lead you to the right
person to help you find true meaning,
hope, and peace in your life.
The God of surprises – Have you ever
been surprised by God? When I was growing up,
(please remember that I am now 53 years young), I
heard the “formula” of what it meant to grow-up
and be a success. Study hard, get a good education,
work hard, be promoted, meet someone, fall in love.
Commit to them for the rest of your lives, in good
times and in the challenges of life, and have a house
with a “white picket fence” – not to keep others out,
but to welcome neighbors in.
Well dear friends, as I look back on my life these
days and as I journey with my mom through her
recovery and healing from a major heart attack, I see
the love of God right there with me, but in ways I
least expected.

So, I did study hard and thought I knew what I
wanted and needed in my life. But God took me on
a roller coaster ride I never would have imagined.
To be truthful to this day, most of my family,
friends, and even my own mom and dad, with all
their support and love through 27+ years of priestly
ministry, can’t quite figure out why God called me.
And for lots of good reasons. But they continue to
love and accept to this day— Why?
Because, I did meet and fall very deeply in love with
someone – Jesus the Christ. Like in all love
relationships, friends see me from time-to-time
struggle, doubt, and fear. They see me celebrate,
speak, and dance with joy. They also know I am
living a real and authentic relationship of
commitment to the best of my ability, even with all
its “warts.”
And, oh, by the way, did
you notice that I now have a
beautiful “white picket
fence?” My thanks to Walt
McCarthy and his “band of
brothers” once again.
Thanks to all of you who made the new porch
happen through your generous financial
contributions. Please know, that the “white picket
fence” of this simple porch, is an invitation from me
to you to always feel welcome here at St. Patrick. I
will do my best to live up to your neighborly ways
and your welcome to me.

There will be NO Mass celebrated at St. Patrick Church on All Saints Day, Thursday, November 1st, but you may join
Fr. Kurt at our school Mass at 8:15am at St. Al’s—St. Pat’s School located on Davey Road (call the office for directions).
Mass will also be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church: 7:30am & 7pm. & SS. Cyril & Methodius: 7am & 6pm (English).
MASS FOR ALL SOULS... Will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church on Friday, November 2nd at
7:30 P.M. We will have a special Mass in our church to remember those who have passed away from November
1st of last year to October 31st of this year, and to remember all souls. If you have lost someone close to you this
past year, we would like a member(s) of your family to come forward to light a candle for your loved one. If you

READING WITH OLLIE
For young children, one of the big challenges in
learning to read is the fear of making mistakes and
feeling embarrassed. Reading to dogs
and other pets provides a simple
solution—a nonjudgmental,
comforting, furry friend who “listens”
and doesn’t notice or comment on
mistakes. Reading to dogs is known
to improve fluency. As a result,
children will read aloud more
frequently and with greater
confidence. Ollie, Ms. Payne’s best
“furry” friend, joins our
kindergarten emergent readers
during one afternoon a week to help
provide a relaxed environment
where the children feel comfortable trying to read.
Although Ollie is not a certified therapy dog, he is
trained to be calm, gentle and attentive. He loves to be
around the children and they love to have him visit
their classroom. The children really look forward to
their turn to read to Ollie!

MARJORIE
Sister Marjorie shared
her love for St. Francis
with the first graders as she read St. Francis and
the Wolf. Sister also taught the students a song
about Brother Francis. Our young students look
forward to Sister Marjorie’s visits on Tuesday
mornings and love the songs and stories she
teaches them. Thank you, Sister Marjorie!

OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AWARENESS MONTH
(THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT OF A LETTER FROM CARDINAL
FRANCIS GEORGE, ARCHBISHOP OF CHICAGO)
Some of us may think that domestic violence is not a significant
problem in our particular parish. On the contrary, commonly
accepted data indicates that 25% of women are abused
physically or sexually by their partners during their lifetime.
Even though we may not see it, people in every parish are
touched by domestic violence. [ ] we should be aware that at
least one in four women have or will have experienced some
physical or sexual abuse. If we add emotional abuse, which is
the most common form of domestic violence, the proportion of
women suffering domestic violence increases dramatically.
These statistics are substantially the same across all ethnic and
social class lines. If we ask [ ] parishioners how many of them
know someone who is a victim of domestic violence, almost
everyone will respond in the affirmative.
In today’s readings: Speaking through the prophet Jeremiah,
the Lord says, “I will gather them from the ends of the world,
with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and
those with child; they shall return as an immense throng. They
departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them.”
Victims of domestic violence live in fear and humiliation,
doubting God’s love and questioning the compassion of the
Church. Those who suffer quietly need to hear Christ’s healing
words.

Thanks to St. Patrick’s Parishioners there will be a lot of
warmer people this winter in our community.
Celebrate—October 1st was a special evening of prayer
and devotion to Mary. Thank you for all those who came
to pray the Rosary.
Serve—THE BLOOD DRIVE was a huge success last
weekend. We had 16 donors! Thank you to all those who
came out to donate blood and for those who donated their
time to organize this worthwhile Parish event.
