June 2010
Dear Friends in Christ,
On the weekend of June 12-13, 2010, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese.
For many years now, we have relied on our retired priests to celebrate Mass and the sacraments in hundreds of parishes
throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Without their dedicated service, many parishes would need to reduce the
number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of
parishes and others fill in to allow pastors some needed time off. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of
the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of
appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry.
The Priests' Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. This year, we have seen the
cost of healthcare, prescription drugs, and nursing home care increase. In addition, the priests' pension fund remains
seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us to continue to support our retired
priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and women Religious is designated to provide
only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection.
As the "Year for Priests" draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their
exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests over eighty years of age, which means
that each one has served for more than fifty-five years. May their spirit continue to enliven our Church!
I am thankful to all of you for your remarkable generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness
this year. Your donations and your prayers are a great affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in
vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago
Notes from the Music Director
Greetings, Friends of St. Patrick!
The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us that the Lord
provides.
This very sentiment is demonstrated in the many
talented, able and generous people in the music
department who give of their time, energies, and talents.
They are ministers to the people at St. Pat’s, to
themselves, and even to the world.
I feel it only appropriate to thank all those who have
been involved directly, or indirectly (i.e. youth choir
parents, choir member spouses, etc.) in the music
ministry this year. To the youth choir, the contemporary
choir, the family choir, the guitar ensemble, the cantors,
the keyboardists, the quartet: thank-you, thank-you,
thank-you for making it another great year.
I would also like to thank Fr. Mike for his time and
service toward the St. Pat’s community. In the two
years I’ve been here at St. Pat’s, I’ve learned much
from him and have enjoyed both working with and
getting to know him. I’m sure I speak on behalf of the
music department when I wish him all the very best at
St. Edward’s. Thank-you again, Fr. Mike.
Even though our youth and contemporary choirs will be
taking a summer break, you can still serve in the
capacity of our Family Choir. Meet in the Parish Hall
basement one hour before each Family Choir liturgy
and get ready to sing! The dates are as follows:
June 27, July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22
– 10 a.m. Masses for all
And don’t forget our Guitar Ensemble, which plays
Masses year round! Contact me if you are interested!
Have a great summer!
Renee Payne, Principal 630-783-2220
From the Principal’s Desk
On Friday, May 21st, the school community celebrated
two fond farewells at a special liturgy: We bid farewell to
our graduating 8th grade class of 2010, and we also said
good-bye to Father Mike Cronin who will be moving on
to St. Edward's parish in Chicago at the end of June. The
school gave Father Mike a beautiful vestment stole that
has the children of the world on one side and depicts
Noah's ark on the other side. We hope that he will think
of us each time he wears it. Father also received a
monetary gift from the school families, as well as a basket
of St. Edward's spirit gear so he will be ready for his new
parish and school.
At the same liturgy, we also bid farewell to our
graduating class. The class of 2010 presented special
thank-you banners to the faculty and staff and gifted the
school with a beautiful tree in honor of our theme of
caring for God's creation. The 8th graders were sent off
with our fond blessings and good wishes. They each
received a special Celtic stone and a bookmark to carry
with them on their new ventures----a little reminder that
we will always love them and care about them and that
they should use the memories from St. Al’s-St. Pat’s as a
support forever.
Feed My Starving Children Fieldtrip
"Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed
the poor." Proverbs 22:9
On Friday, May 28th, the 3-4th graders went on a field
trip to Feed My Starving Children. Feed My Starving
Children is a non-profit organization with a site in
Aurora, IL. They focus on providing food for children of
countries that suffer from starvation. There they packaged
meals for the children of Haiti. The meals consisted of
soy, vegetable, rice, and chicken powder. Once all the
meals were packaged, the students prayed over them.
After two hours, the students packaged 15,768 meals,
which was enough to feed 43 children for an entire year.
It was an amazing experience! I encourage others to
volunteer. Visit www.fmsc.org for more information.
God of Living Waters,
I know I must enter this river of life
to grow into what You are calling me to be.
You have worked many miracles with water;
do the same with me during this journey.
Immerse me completely in. your grace.
Send your Spirit upon. me as I work my way
through the twisting currents and rocks along the
Way.
Keep me afloat when the challenges of life weigh
me down.
Part the waters of uncertain and uncertainty doubt
so I can find the real me and see the real You.
Fill me with faith and love
so my life might give life to others.
Let your light guide and sustain me
so that I may become a living sign of your real
presence to all we meet along the River of Life.
Definition of Golf:
A game, of considerable antiquity in Scotland, in which a
small hard ball is struck with various clubs into a series of
small cylindrical holes made at intervals, usually of a
hundred yards or more, on a golf-course. The aim is to
drive the ball into any one hole, or into all the holes
successively, with the fewest possible strokes; commonly
two persons, or two couples (a ‘foursome'), play against
each other.
Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to his
disciples and said, “Take it; this is my body.” (Mark
22:26). God calls us through his Son to be one in the body
of Christ. Could God be calling you to the priesthood or
religious life To explore the possibility, contact Fr. Joe
when we share what we have - even if it doesn’t
seem like that much - miracles can happen. God
