FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of Holy Cross: This Spring issue of Crossroads features just a few highlights of the 2007-2008 school year. It is impossible, however, for any publication to fully capture the essence of the Holy Cross experience. Each and everyday our young men attend school with the intention of preparing themselves with the skills necessary to enjoy a productive and fulfilling life. This has become an increasingly daunting task for our teachers and students, as the world, and its expectations, is far more complex now than it was even a decade ago. At Holy Cross we fully understand that nothing remains the same—and that modern life is often characterized by uncertainty which can allow for great opportunity, and, at the same time, a deep sense of bewilderment and insecurity within our young people. As I have expressed so many times in the past—the thing that makes Holy Cross truly unique is that we fully accept and realize that educating the mind alone is not enough. We have all witnessed highly talented and educated people who rise to great heights, only to destroy their lives and careers as a result of a deficit of character. So often the need to be important and recognized overshadows the true purpose of life. As educators we can teach our young people all the math, history, and science there is to know—and they will still remain ignorant of how to use it for the good of themselves and others. It is for this reason that Holy Cross remains steadfast in its mission to educate the “minds and hearts” of our young men—to nurture their spirit as well as their intellectual capacity. As you read the various features in this newsletter, I invite you to truly appreciate and enjoy all those things which comprise the Holy Cross experience—fine academic programs, a premier service learning program, extracurricular activities, and a personalized learning environment which focuses on character development. All of these things – and much more – contribute to the formation of the “Holy Cross Man,” who epitomizes the best ideals of Father Basil Moreau, CSC, now honored by the universal Church by virtue of his beatification on September 15, 2007. Sincerely in Holy Cross, Brother Stephen LaMendola, csc ‘67 President Alumnus Joins Heritage Society With a $1,000,000 Bequest to Holy Cross Board Chair, Dan Bartolomeo ’73, interviews Marty Lenehan ‘59 DB I am certain that a great deal of thought went into making a decision to leave such a large bequest to your high school. Can you explain what motivated you to do this ML I would answer by saying, “To those who God has given much, much is expected in return.” Holy Cross provided me with the structure, discipline, and education that I needed as a young man, and now it is time to give something back. DB Why did you specifically select Holy Cross for your generosity ML Because of my deep bond to Holy Cross, I am committed to ensuring its future and fully understand that the school needs adequate funding in order to do this. DB As a member of the school’s first class, you must have many fine memories of your time at Holy Cross. ML Those were very formative years for me, and Holy Cross played a large part in my becoming the person I am today. I also fully understand that many things have changed over the past fifty years. Back in 1955 when I was a freshman, most of the teachers were religious whose services were fully contributed. In those days things were simpler— there were no computers or technology labs, and the building was brand new. I fully understand that running a school in this century is enormously expensive—and that tuition alone cannot cover all the costs. 2
memory of my son, Eamonn, was a very special opportunity for myself and my family to create a legacy in his name as well as help other young men to obtain a Holy Cross education. Dan Bartolomeo ’73 Board Chair Marty Lenehan ‘59 DB Are there other changes that you have seen over the years ML Class sizes are much smaller now, and there are scholarships available to freshmen. In 1959 classes could be as large as 60 students. In fact, the Class of ’59 had about 350 students. Of course, things were a lot stricter then and the dress code required that we wear jackets and ties. That was a very different era—today’s society is far more complex. DB How did attending Holy Cross affect the choices that you made throughout your life ML The most important thing that I learned was discipline which prepared me for a career at UPS that spanned four decades. I started in the company at nineteen as a driver and later moved into supervising and creating special projects. I would most definitely attribute my success over all those years to the values, ethics, and integrity that I learned at Holy Cross. DB Was there anything else that you learned ML I learned to work very hard! In fact, while attending Holy Cross I worked after school six days a week and full-time during the summer to pay my tuition. This was not unusual in those days—with many of my classmates working almost full-time to help their families. DB You have been very generous to Holy Cross over the years as a major contributor to the Annual Fund and through the establishment of the Eamonn Lenehan Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of your son. Can you explain your willingness to be so generous to Holy Cross in so many ways. ML In addition to my deep love for the school, I would say that my parents set an example of generosity for myself and my two brothers. Their regular donations to our parish taught us that it was important to give something back for our good fortune. Opening the scholarship in the DB In addition to your financial generosity, you also volunteer for the school. Can you tell us a little about that ML About a year or so ago, the Advancement Office asked me and my brother Eddie, also a member of the Class of ’59, to serve on the Golf Committee. We both enjoy playing golf, so this was certainly something that we were willing to help with. It is truly a wonderful event—a very special day—and it is a pleasure to help obtain auction prizes and do other fundraising for the event. DB For the benefit of those who are considering making a bequest to Holy Cross, can you explain the benefits of making this type of contribution. ML The greatest benefit is knowing that this gift will someday make a huge difference in the lives of the students that attend Holy Cross. In terms of tax benefits, it was obvious that it was a far better thing to leave the funds to the school as opposed to giving it to the government. My family will inherit a large amount of money anyway, so it seemed like the right thing to make a bequest to Holy Cross. DB What did you have to do in order to make this bequest ML All it required was a visit to my attorney to create a codicil to my will stipulating Holy Cross as a beneficiary. This was simple, easy, and not very expensive. Of course, I provided the school with a copy of the document and the name of the attorney. There are many different types of bequests—and even trust agreements—with huge tax advantages that can be arranged as well. Right now, this was the best way for me to give back to Holy Cross in a meaningful way.
