ing, and two years later was ordained as a priest. He was<br />

assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cypress Hills and in 1999<br />

became Vocation Director for the Diocese of Brooklyn and<br />

Director of St. Paul’s Center which brought him in contact again<br />

with Holy Cross students through the retreat<br />

program. He contributed generously of his time<br />

at many of the school’s religious activities—<br />

including serving as the Principal Celebrant<br />

and Homilist for the school’s 9/11 Memorial<br />

Liturgy. Father Jim’s path took an unexpected<br />

turn when he became ill in the spring of 2002,<br />

passing away in July of 2004.<br />

Brother<br />

Karl J. Diemand, CSC<br />

“He was such a formidable presence<br />

that many people didn’t understand him, but<br />

when you got to know him, you saw his soft<br />

side – he was really a pussycat!”<br />

Born in Albany, New York, Karl Diemand<br />

entered the Congregation of Holy Cross<br />

after high school. During his early career Brother Karl’s teaching<br />

assignments were widespread. A graduate of Fordham<br />

University and Villanova, he join the faculty at Holy Cross High<br />

School in Flushing in 1965 where he ministered for thirty-eight<br />

years until an illness forced<br />

him to retire in 2003. Brother<br />

Karl served as Director of<br />

Athletics, and in his later<br />

years, Coordinator of Sports.<br />

He was in his 57th year of<br />

religious life in the<br />

Congregation when he died<br />

on October 30, 2006 of a long illness.<br />

Frank T. Chiarello ‘72<br />

“Holy Cross served as a moral<br />

<strong>com</strong>pass during my formative years.”<br />

Starting as a porter in the buildings maintained<br />

by the <strong>com</strong>pany where his mother<br />

worked, Frank acquired his real estate<br />

license at the age of 18. After receiving a<br />

BBA in Accounting from<br />

Iona College, Frank held<br />

several prestigious positions in the field of<br />

accounting and real estate—which lead to his<br />

founding WRAProperties--which is still<br />

thriving today. Frank served on the Holy<br />

Cross Board of Directors for six years where<br />

he became the first Chair of the school’s<br />

Institutional Advancement Committee.<br />

Under his leadership, the school launched<br />

the Generation to Generation Campaign and<br />

he founded the Br. Stephen LaMendola Scholarship Endowment<br />

for which he is actively fundraising.<br />

Bishop Rene Valero<br />

Cross and Anchor Award<br />

“From as early as I can remember it was my<br />

deepest desire and goal to be<strong>com</strong>e a priest.”<br />

The youngest son of, Caesar Valero and Maria<br />

Cordova, Rene Valero attended Sacred Heart<br />

Mission House in Girard, Pennsylvania,<br />

Cathedral College in Brooklyn, Immaculate<br />

Conception Seminary in Huntington, Long<br />

Island, and was ordained on June 2, 1956. He received a graduate<br />

degree from Fordham University’s School of Social Service<br />

and served at Catholic Charities—in the Family Service Office,<br />

as Kings County Director, and as the Founding Director of<br />

the Office for the Aging. In<br />

1980 he was appointed an<br />

Auxiliary Bishop of the<br />

Diocese of Brooklyn by<br />

Pope John Paul II. Between<br />

1980 and his recent retirement<br />

he has served as<br />

Director of Office of Migration,<br />

Regional Bishop of<br />

Queens, and Regional Bishop of North Queens.<br />

State Senator<br />

Frank Padavan<br />

Cross and Anchor Award<br />

“There is great satisfaction when you confront<br />

a problem and then set about to solve it.”<br />

Frank Padavan earned a bachelor’s degree<br />

in electrical engineering from Brooklyn<br />

Polytechnic Institute (now Polytechnic University)<br />

and an MBA from NYU. Prior to public life, he worked for<br />

Westinghouse Electric Corporation and served as Deputy<br />

Commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings.<br />

Attaining the rank of Colonel, Senator Padavan, has a 30-year<br />

active and reserve career in the US Army Corps of Engineers,<br />

including service as <strong>com</strong>manding officer of the 411th Engineer<br />

Brigade and chief of staff, 77th ARCOM. Among a myriad of projects,<br />

Senator Padavan played a major role in creating the<br />

Holocaust Resource Center at Queensboro Community College,<br />

the Alley Pond Park Environmental Center, the Queens Farm<br />

Museum, the Parklands at Fort<br />

Totten, and “Padavan Field”.<br />

He has been a leader in the battle<br />

against crime, drugs, and<br />

alcohol abuse, and is a steadfast<br />

advocate for the mentally<br />

disabled.<br />
