Appendix 6: Glossary and abbreviations HAD HHS LOS OHS PROMs RCT SF- 36® SF- 12® THR/THA TKR/TKA WOMAC Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale A screening tool, which measures separately the severity of anxiety and depression. Harris Hip Score A disease- specific measure covering four domains of pain, function, deformity and motion. Length of stay Period of time from admission into hospital to discharge. Oxford Hip Score A short 12- item self- administered outcome tool to assess function and pain for people undergoing total hip replacement. Patient Reported Outcome Measures Measures to provide information on an individual’s perceptions of the effectiveness of care delivered in the National Health Service. Randomised controlled trial An experimental study in which the participants are randomly allocated to two or more different intervention groups, usually either the treatment of interest (intervention) group or the control (usual treatment) group. Health survey A 36- question health survey which produces an 8- scale profile of functional health and wellbeing scores as well as psychometrically- based physical and mental health summary measures, and a preference- based health utility index. Health survey Shortened version of SF- 36®. Total hip replacement/Total hip arthroplasty A surgical procedure in which a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial one (known as prosthesis). Total knee replacement/Total knee arthroplasty A surgical procedure in which a damaged, worn or diseased knee joint is replaced with an artificial one. Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index A self- administered disease- specific, health status measure covering pain, stiffness and physical function in people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. 106 Occupational therapy for adults undergoing total hip replacement
