Service user perspectives of the
recommendations
8.1 Overall service user opinions
Service users involved in the consultation on outcomes were given the opportunity of
expressing an interest in further involvement in the project. Those individuals who
intimated they would be willing to provide further information or would like to
contribute more to the guideline development work being undertaken by the College
of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section - Trauma and Orthopaedics were
subsequently contacted and asked if they would be willing to review the draft
recommendations.
A facilitated meeting was offered to members of the Rushcliffe 50+ Forum Health Sub
Group (two attended the meeting, one completed the consultation by post and one
via a telephone discussion and subsequent completion of the questionnaire), and a
postal consultation was carried out with those interested service users known to the
Golden Jubilee National Hospital (responses returned by 23 out of 40 people
contacted).
This consultation on the draft recommendations, in addition to any general comments,
sought views on three key issues:
Key issue
‘Yes’ response
Do you think the recommendations are easy to understand 85%
Do you think these recommendations will help service users
prepare for their operation
Do you think these recommendations will help service users to
achieve the benefits and outcomes they want after their surgery
A number of respondents provided remarks on each key issue, and 15 provided further
additional comments. Some of these comments have been incorporated in the relevant
recommendation sections as service user feedback statements.
8.2 Understanding the recommendations
The majority of service users felt that they were able to understand the
recommendation statements. This guideline’s target audience is occupational therapy
personnel, and therefore the response that 85 per cent of the service users indicated
the recommendations were easy to understand, was a positive outcome. It is
appreciated that some respondents nonetheless found the language ‘jargonistic’,
suggesting that if the target audience was service users, the language could be usefully
reviewed.
