Service user perspectives of the recommendations
“The recommendations are very clear and take you through the journey that you as a
patient go on when having a planned hip replacement.”
50+ Forum service user feedback
“The recommendations are a clear picture, to all patients, and their relatives to give
them an understanding of the services available to them.”
Golden Jubilee National Hospital service user feedback
A specific service user version of this guideline was not part of the guideline
development project; however, the response received from service users does support
the intention that the guideline may be of benefit to service users and carers, and
potentially enable them to be better informed about the occupational therapy process
(section 3.3).
8.3 Preparing for the operation and achieving benefits and
outcomes after surgery
The views received by service users reviewing the draft recommendations highlighted
the relevance of the statements in preparing service users for their operation, and in
their contribution to enabling service users to achieve the benefits and outcomes they
want after their surgery.
Respondents did not specifically comment on all recommendations, but feedback
included common themes of the importance of being treated as an individual; receiving
information; and effective communication. These principles of practice should
essentially underpin every recommendation.
“It is really important you are treated as an individual. In a group the information
seems very generalised and you think ‘well my home or lifestyle isn’t like that’ so you
don’t necessarily get the benefit. But if someone talks and LISTENS to you then these
recommendations will make a lot of difference.”
“Being able to ask questions without feeling stupid is so important – everyone is
different so some people will be worried about getting back to work – others will be
thinking how can I make a cup of tea in my tiny kitchen with a zimmer frame.”
50+ Forum service user feedback
“Feeling like you matter as an individual cannot be underestimated – it really impacts
on your belief you can do it and get back to normal.”
