FERPA SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING<br />

What is FERPA<br />

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was passed in 1974 by Congress to require<br />

educational institutions to:<br />

• Provide <strong>student</strong>s access to their educational records.<br />

• Allow <strong>student</strong>s to correct inaccurate or misleading information in these records.<br />

• Limit the release of information to third parties.<br />

What is DIRECTORY INFORMATION<br />

The <strong>College</strong> may disclose any of these "directory information" items without prior written<br />

consent, unless the <strong>student</strong> has submitted a written request to the Office of Admissions and<br />

Records not to release directory information pertaining to them. If the <strong>student</strong> has requested<br />

non‐disclosure, you will see a FERPA Service Indicator on the VCCS Custom Menu. Listed below<br />

is VCCS Policy on Student Directory information that can be provided:<br />

• Student's full name<br />

• Electronic mail address<br />

• Local and permanent mailing addresses and telephone numbers<br />

• Semesters of attendance<br />

• Enrollment status (full‐ or part‐time)<br />

• Date of admission<br />

• Date of expected or actual graduation<br />

• School, major and minor fields of study (current or past)<br />

• Classification (freshman, etc.)<br />

• Type of degree being pursued<br />

• Degrees, honors, and awards received (including scholarships and fellowships)<br />

What is NOT DIRECTORY INFORMATION<br />

• Social Security Number<br />

• Race<br />

• Ethnicity<br />

• Nationality<br />

• Gender<br />

• Date/Place of Birth<br />
