Environment, Health and Safety
We have taken aggressive steps to reduce the environmental impact of our worldwide
manufacturing operations. In 1993, we defined a set of environmental policies, established
implementation and measurement guidelines, and assigned responsibilities for ongoing compliance.
These include anticipating and enforcing environmental regulations in the countries in which we
operate. An Environmental, Health and Safety Charter, signed by the Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer, is available to employees via the corporate intranet and to the public via our corporate
website.
Our Environmental, Health and Safety organization reports (EH&S) to a member of our
Executive Committee. Within EH&S there is a Corporate General Manager and three regional
managers who direct the efforts of several EH&S coordinators responsible for local implementation
of the corporate policy and guidelines. Legal support and counsel are provided by our attorneys.
EH&S oversight has also been extended to our recent acquisitions, including Technicolor.
A comprehensive EH&S audit program was established in 1996 to assess the efforts of each of
our manufacturing locations towards compliance with company policies and guidelines, industry
standards, and applicable laws and regulations. The audit, conducted at each location at least once
every three years, also assesses the ability of our management systems to identify and address
EH&S issues and to ensure that all storage practices and hazardous waste handling are in
compliance with our guidelines. In 2001, the audit program was extended to companies acquired by
us, including audits conducted at eleven Technicolor facilities.
In addition, our goal is to have each of our manufacturing facilities certified to ISO 14001 by the
end of 2004. Certification has been achieved at six locations and has proved to be an opportunity for
challenging established practices and encouraging new ideas.
Our health and safety programs are designed to identify potential risks and take appropriate
prevention and severity-reduction measures. Accident and injury prevention programs include local
safety committees and specialized task forces, audits, incident investigations with appropriate
corrective actions, employee training, and monitoring for chemical, physical, biological, and
ergonomic risks. Key metrics are monitored and reported monthly.
Additionally, we implemented a worldwide Significant Business Incident (SBI) procedure for
responding to such emergencies as industrial accidents, fires, chemical spills, and severe weather.
This global program is managed at the highest levels of the company and is supported by local SBI
teams at each Thomson site.
We have established a far-reaching product life cycle management strategy that provides a
systematic approach to identifying and minimizing the adverse impact that may occur during the
various life stages of our products. The EH&S group is a key participant in this activity and works to
recognize industry and legislative trends and communicate with and support our operations in
effective strategy development. Activities have included examination of eco-design principles to
promote end-of-life product recycling, development of a software tool to measure the environmental
impact of our products from design through disposal, and the establishment of global task forces to
