Ellen' April 1635, <strong>the</strong>n aged 32," and with his wife<br />

Mercie and two children came to Cambridge, where he<br />

died Dec. 8, 1653.<br />

His widow Mercie became <strong>the</strong> 2d. wife <strong>of</strong> Deacon<br />

Edmund <strong>Rice</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> No. 11 and No. 12<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deacon's children. Thus Mary (<strong>Rice</strong>) Brigham's<br />

children, were <strong>the</strong> great grand-children<br />

<strong>of</strong> Deacon<br />

Edmund <strong>Rice</strong>; but grand-children <strong>of</strong> his predecessor<br />

Tho. Brigham his wife's first husband. Two <strong>of</strong><br />

Mary's children married Howes (<strong>the</strong>n spelled How)<br />

and one married a Ward.<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> first intermarriages with <strong>the</strong> Wards and<br />

Howes but I could enumerate at least 20 more in each<br />

family. The Deacon became <strong>the</strong> progenitor <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />

Mass. Wards and Howes, amongst whom should be<br />

named Elias Howe, Samuel Gridley Howe and his<br />

distinguished wife, Julia Ward Howe,t now in her 91st.<br />

year, Timothy O. Howe, P. M. Gen'l <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U. S.,<br />

John Q. A. Ward, one <strong>of</strong> our most famous sculptors,<br />

etc.,<br />

Hannah <strong>Rice</strong><br />

(15.3) married ano<strong>the</strong>r Ward, Eleazer,<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Deacon Wm. and Elizabeth Ward <strong>of</strong> Sudbury<br />

and Marlboro. He was slain by <strong>the</strong> Indians, on <strong>the</strong><br />

road between Marlboro and Sudbury, in April 1676,<br />

aged 27 years. His widow married Richard Taylor,<br />

Oct. 17, 1777. <strong>By</strong> <strong>the</strong> first marriage <strong>the</strong>re was one<br />

child and by <strong>the</strong> second <strong>the</strong>re were four.<br />

Tamasin <strong>Rice</strong> (19.7) married Benj. Parmenter and left<br />

t Julia Ward Howe, 7th. in descent from John Ward, a soldier in<br />

Cromwell's army, is also descended from Deacon Edmund <strong>Rice</strong><br />

through <strong>the</strong> Cutler family. Her mo<strong>the</strong>r was Julia Rush Cutler. Mrs.<br />

Howe's sister, Louisa Cutler Ward, married Thomas Crawford, <strong>the</strong><br />

eminent Sculptor. Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

son and 8th. in descent from John Ward and Deacon Edmund <strong>Rice</strong>.<br />
