This Little Chapter telling <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir descent<br />

from Deacon Edmund <strong>Rice</strong> is<br />

only meant for <strong>the</strong> posterity<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wm. <strong>Rice</strong> <strong>of</strong> Va. and Ohio, (1780-1827) for<br />

unto us it was given to inherit from <strong>the</strong> Puritan Deacon,<br />

through 2 <strong>of</strong> his English born Sons a double portion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Rice</strong> characteristics and obliquities.<br />

William <strong>Rice</strong>, born 1697, was <strong>the</strong> 3d. son <strong>of</strong> Deacon<br />

Edmund <strong>Rice</strong>, (born Dec. 6, 1653) and Joyce Russell;<br />

Dea. Edmund was <strong>the</strong> 2d. son <strong>of</strong> Deacon Edward <strong>Rice</strong>,<br />

(born 1619) and his wife Anna; Edward was <strong>the</strong> 2d.<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Deacon Edmund, <strong>the</strong> Pilgrim.<br />

Martha <strong>Rice</strong>, (born 1693) was <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Isaac<br />

<strong>Rice</strong> (born May 1, 1668) and Sybil Collins; Isaac <strong>Rice</strong><br />

was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w <strong>Rice</strong>, 1629, 5th. child and 4th.<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Deacon Edmund <strong>Rice</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Pilgrim.<br />

being great-grand children <strong>of</strong> Deacon Edmund and full<br />

second cousins on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rice</strong> side, concluded, very sensibly,<br />

that this degree <strong>of</strong> consanguinity was not sufficient,<br />

and accordingly <strong>the</strong>y were married at Sudbury,<br />

Mass., Oct. 7, 1719. William was at this time 22<br />

years old and was <strong>the</strong> youngest member <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

family. He had 2 bro<strong>the</strong>rs and 2 sisters. The oldest<br />

sister Joyce, married Samuel Abbot and became <strong>the</strong><br />

progenitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> long line <strong>of</strong> Abbots, who have been<br />

"Makers <strong>of</strong> History" in <strong>the</strong> U. S.<br />

Martha (<strong>Rice</strong>) <strong>Rice</strong> was born Oct. 17, 1693, and so<br />

was 26 years old plus 10 days, when she was married.<br />

She evened up this discrepancy by departing this life<br />
